3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
So far it's been a good week, happy and fulfilling, and it's a case of keeping on doing what I do. Time continues to whizz by but I have come to an acceptance of it. I'm very conscious of the increasing fragility of my body, muscles in particular that strain all-too-easily. I just have to keep moving smoothly, gently and steadily.

My mind of course has always been fragile but I have learned to look after it, and I'm very grateful that it's currently enjoying circumstances where it can thrive, allowing awareness to be liberated and life-purpose to be fulfilled. Every moment I have a difference I can make.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
Missus is still "siren looning" but at least phones me while doing it so I can refuse her permission to come home. Son is having a surprisingly good time in Belarus, and Daughter has responded positively to "diplomatic relations", so all is reasonably well on the family front.

I can thus focus on the stuff I myself have to do. My own mental health has an unhealthy default, so requires daily disciplines to keep my mind healthy. These I'm doing, and I know full well I cannot afford not to do them.

What I'm really loving about this life experience is being a difference-maker to people who are now counting on me. That's a big incentive to look after myself and keep on keeping on. I've passed through the phase of frustration at the ignorance of the masses to be focused on what I myself am doing.

I am well-protected from arrogance by being highly conscious of my own vulnerabilities. I can be easily broken I'm very grateful for every day that I'm not.

1. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY
4th July 1941: The Lviv Professors Massacre
25 Polish academics from the city of Lwów (since 1945 Lviv, Ukraine) were killed by Nazi German occupation forces along with their families. By targeting prominent citizens and intellectuals for elimination, the Nazis hoped to prevent anti-Nazi activity and to weaken the resolve of the Polish resistance movement. According to an eyewitness, the executions were made by an Einsatzgruppen unit (Einsatzkommando zur besonderen Verwendung) under the command of SS-Brigadeführer Karl Eberhard Schöngarth with the participation of Ukrainian translators, who were dressed in German uniforms.

Before September 1939 and the joint Nazi-Soviet invasion of Poland, Lviv ( was the home for many Polish and Polish Jewish intellectuals, political and cultural activists, scientists and members of Poland's interwar intelligentsia.

After Lviv was occupied by the Soviets in September 1939, Lwów University was renamed in honor of Ivan Franko, a major Ukrainian literary figure who lived in Lviv, and the language of instruction was changed from Polish to Ukrainian. Lwów was then captured by German forces on 30 June 1941 after the German invasion of the Soviet Union. Along with German Wehrmacht units, a number of Abwehr and SS formations entered the city. During the Nazi occupation, almost all of the 120,000 Jewish inhabitants of the city were killed, within the city's ghetto or in Bełżec extermination camp. By the end of the war, only 200–800 Jews survived.

To control the remaining population, prominent citizens and intellectuals, particularly Jews and Poles, were either confined in ghettos or transported to execution sites such as the Gestapo prison on Pełczyńska Street, the Brygidki Prison, the former military prison at Zamarstynów and to the fields surrounding the city — in the suburb of Winniki, the Kortumówka hills and the Jewish Cemetery. Many of those killed were prominent leaders of Polish society: politicians, artists, aristocrats, sportsmen, scientists, priests, rabbis and other members of the intelligentsia. This mass murder is regarded as a pre-emptive measure to keep the Polish resistance scattered and to prevent Poles from revolting against Nazi rule.

The massacres were part of the infamous "AB-Aktion" pacification plans, one of the early stages of Generalplan Ost, after the German campaign against the USSR started and the eastern half of prewar Poland fell under German occupation in place of that of the Soviet Union.

The victims were either beaten to death, killed with a bayonet, killed with a hammer, or shot to death. The professors themselves were shot.

The massacre was ordered by the highest level of the Third Reich authorities. The direct decision maker concerning the massacre was the commander of the Sicherheitspolizei (Befehlshaber der Sicherheitspolizei und des SD- BdS) in Krakau District Generalgouvernement, Brigadeführer Karl Eberhard Schöngarth. The following Gestapo officers also participated: Walter Kutschmann, Felix Landau, Heinz Heim (Chief of Staff Schöngarth), Hans Krueger (Krüger) and Kurt Stawizki. None of these were ever punished for their roles in the Lviv massacre. Kutschmann lived under a fake identity in Argentina until January 1975, when he was found and exposed by journalist Alfredo Serra in the resort town of Miramar. He was arrested ten years later in Florida, Buenos Aires, by Interpol agents but died of a heart attack in jail before he could be extradited, on 30 August 1986.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
After recent events, I now send Missus off to work with some trepidation, hoping she doesn't hear a police siren! However, there's nothing I can do about sirens or how loopy Missus interprets them, only manage her behaviour to the best of my ability. That much I think I can congratulate myself on so doing. When shit goes down, there has to be acceptance and the right response. I am most pleased with myself that I am currently doing that well.

Though I am possessed by Time Greed, and never have enough, the reality is that today I have abundant time to achieve everything I need to do, and unless something comes up, absolutely no excuse not to! Primal, personal, domestic, client and Missus needs can all be met today, and I've every intention of doing so. I see this avatar as a meme-spreading and difference-making machine, and I feel profoundly grateful to that its purpose being fulfilled to the max.

3rd July 1940: The Attack on Mers-el-Kebir
The Attack on Mers-el-Kébir, part of Operation Catapult and also known as the Battle of Mers-el-Kébir, was a British naval bombardment of the French Navy (Marine nationale) at its base at Mers El Kébir on the coast of what was then French Algeria on 3 July 1940. The raid resulted in the deaths of 1,297 French servicemen, the sinking of a battleship and the damaging of five other ships.

The combined air-and-sea attack was conducted by the Royal Navy as a direct response to the Franco-German armistice of 22 June, which had seen Britain's sole continental ally replaced by a collaborationist, pro-Nazi government administrated from Vichy. The new Vichy government had also inherited the considerable French naval force of the Marine Nationale; of particular significance were the seven battleships of the Bretagne, Dunkerque and Richelieu classes, which collectively represented the second largest force of capital ships in Europe behind the British.

Since Vichy was seen by the British as a mere puppet state of the Nazi regime, there was serious fear that they would surrender or loan the ships to the Kriegsmarine, an outcome which would largely undo Britain's tenuous grasp on European naval superiority and confer a major Axis advantage in the ongoing Battle of the Atlantic. Despite assurances from Admiral Darlan, the Commander of the French Navy, that the fleet would remain under French control and out of the hands of the Germans, Winston Churchill, still reeling from Dunkirk and stung by the Vichy French collaboration, determined that the fleet was simply too dangerous to remain intact, French sovereignty notwithstanding.

Arriving off Mers-el-Kebir, The British fleet issued an ultimatum to the French - Scuttle their fleet, sail to Britain to continue the war against Germany or be attacked. With the French refusing to surrender, the attack began and did successfully cripple the French fleet.

In response to the British attack at Mers-el-Kébir and another at Dakar, the French mounted air raids on Gibraltar. The Vichy government also severed diplomatic relations with the United Kingdom. The attack remains controversial.

The predominant British attitude was that the attack was made out of dire necessity and self-preservation. The French on the other hand thought they were acting honorably in terms of their armistice with Nazi Germany, and were fully convinced they would never turn over their fleet to Germany, and saw the British action as a betrayal.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
You can never know of course, but my expectation, after some recent turbulence, is a settled period in every sense. Dry weather will allow laundry and garden stuff to be kept on top of. Missus' most recent delusion has been contained - as her delusions are triggered by stress, and since there was none at home, I'm certain a stressful week at school set it off. There's nothing I can do about that, but there's Eid holiday coming and she's been well-rested this weekend, so I'm hopeful for a settling there too.

A quite significant development has been the opening of a "diplomatic channel" with Daughter with both myself and Son. Discussion has in my case been kept to the relatively safe ground of Missus, on which there is common cause. It has been a pleasant relief to exchange information rather than bile.

This channel is in the best interest of everyone, and makes life easier. It also means that Daughter can take up the mantle of care with at least some knowledge of what to do in the event of my death. Son, I fear is simply not ready for such a burden if it fell on him. He would have the willingness but not the patience or organization. Let's hope I outlive Missus - that is in the best interest of all.
