On the Russian Front... There is very heavy fighting between German 6th Army and Soviet 62nd Army around the Red October factory, tractor factory, and Olovka salient in Stalingrad.

In Berlin... Germany and Turkey sign a new economic agreement.
In a speech to the Reichstag, Hitler decribes the British government as "military idiots".

In the North Sea... The RAF lay more mines

In the English Channel... In an attack on a German convoy, escort warships sink 5 Royal Navy patrol boats, but vessel V-2003 and freighter Thule are also sunk.

In North Africa... British 131st Infantry Brigade unsuccessfully attacks elements of the Italian Folgore Division and German Ramcke Parachute Brigade at Deir el Munassib. Luftwaffe ace Hans-Joachim Marseille is killed baling out of an Me-109 fighter after an engine failure.

In the Atlantic... British vessel Empire Avocet sunk by U-125,  Alipore by U-516, Kumsang by U-125, and Siam II by U-506.

In the Aleutian Islands... US 11th Air Force aircraft attack Kiska Island and Attu Island.

In the Pacific... Admiral Nimitz arrives at Guadalcanal by B-17 for a one-day inspection.

In Papua New Guinea... Australian forces with US air support reach Nauro on the Kokoda Track as the Japanese rearguard withdraws.

Over Burma... RAF aircraft attack Akyab

In the Indian Ocean... A Vichy French vessel sunk by British destroyer Nizam off Madagascar.
