3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
The famly finances for February proved to be in much better shape than I was dreading, and the books balanced. My forecast is that despite my therapist insurance and more vet fees due in March, books will also balance in March. This has done wonders for morale and belief! Success in nuclear family relationships also boosted morale, diffusing tensions between the other three, and February ended with a suitably celebratory marital time culminating in which I rung missus' bell particularly loudly. Male ego was suitably smug!

March consequently begins drenched in Gratitude, the best possible frame of mind. I am very much achieving my purpose - wielding my abundance to make a positive difference. I want to "make hay while the sun shines" - while there is no adversity causing distractions, it's an opportunity to focus attention and experience higher states of consciousness. The more often I am "cosmically conscious", the less distracted I will be by unforeseen events and the more effective I will become in my chosen purpose.

4. TODAY'S QUESTION FOR YOU
Are you doing things that are bringing you closer to achieving your objectives for your life?

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
My mind begins today where I want it to be - in a neutral calm place. However there may be an adrenalin rush when I do the family accounts - and not in a good way! I never do look forward to it, but it is different this time - I expect to be in the red for the first time since 2008. A string of unexpected and unavoidable expenses has arisen in December - February of which I could do nothing about.

When circumstances are benign for a long period, you can become dependent on them, and a downturn therefore upsets your equilibrium. Fear can take over at this point and threaten a downward spiral, where fear generates behaviour that generates more fear. I am learning to respond to adversity by letting go of that lost and trusting in my intuition for my next move.

It's also important to keep focus on gratitude, so I have various reminders around the house and on the laptop to prompt me into that frame of mind. At the same time I need to keep my attention on my intention - what I'm trying to achieve. It's surprisingly easy to lose sight of this. I use daily mantras to remind me. My principal one is: What is my purpose? My purpose is to wield abundance to make a difference through loving, performance, teaching and therapy.

In ancient Greece, a dinner host would take the first sip of wine to assure guests the wine was not poisoned, hence the phrase “drinking to one’s health.” “Toasting” started in ancient Rome when the Romans continued the Greek tradition but started dropping a piece of toasted bread into each wine glass to temper undesirable tastes or excessive acidity.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
Hmm, another hefty energy bill for March, although below the £200 mark this time. There has to be an acceptance - staying warm is a fundamental and non-negotiable priority.

Uncertainty is my chosen lifestyle, which means that I live by appropriate measured responses to what occurs, and trust in the process, that resources will come however they come. In other words, keep grounded in the present!

This does not mean I'm immune from the "panic" response in the face of troubling news and events, but I have learned what to do in these situations, which is to look inward for the correct action. Concentration, an essential skill for self-development, is closely associated with the act of listening. Listening makes all the internal noise quieten down, and allows intuition to then function properly and guide you to the correct action. When the going gets tough, the enlightened get listening!

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
Son returns to college today after the half-term break, but missus has an extra day off so a morning of "marital enrichment" is expected. With a client in the early evening and the house a mess, there's no time for meditation today, although I did enjoy a 2-hour session on Sunday.

With a settled home environment, I have had the opportunity to focus on self-development, particularly on raising consciousness. Whilst consciousness is a genuine phenomenon, the concept of the self is not. As stated in Buddhist philosophy, there is no seer, only seeing. Though all-pervasive, the self is only a concept with no basis in reality. The fact that it is an illusion does not generally matter if there is no internal discord within it, but my own is by default negative and destructive.

In order for this life experience to be positive, it is therefore necessary from my own point in time and space to raise awareness above the illusion to pure consciousness, awareness without an agenda. The paradox is that the consequence of such a view is positive. The point of awareness, where a self used to be, experiences joy in the sense of the absence of internal conflict.

With the loss of the illusion of self, the illusion of "free-will" also disappears. Consequently, experience unfolds like a movie, the inevitable consequence of the process of energy changing form. Because there is no self, there is no feeling of helplessness as a result but rather fascination at events unfolding.

A further paradox is that to achieve this level of consciousness, it begins with a concept of self wishing to escape suffering. A process then begins in which time spent as self becomes increasingly less, although the rate of decrease is uneven. Increasingly, what was "self" becomes a simply set of interactions closest to your awareness, that unfold themselves without needing any act of will.

Over time, the effort required to stay "cosmically" conscious becomes less until it becomes the new default. At this point, all struggle ceases permanently.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
With both shifts of the Weekend Job going smoothly, and letting go of things I cannot change, my mind is free to address two separate issues - firstly the dysfuntional fraternal relationship between Son & Daughter.

As even-handed as I wish to be, the problem lies squarely with Daughter, who whilst claiming to want a good relationship with her brother, behaves in highly inconsiderate ways that only infuriate him, makes no allowances for his teen moods and feelings, and at the same time refuses to confess or apologise for anything, and can only think how hurt she is by any form of criticism.

I find all this utterly exasperating, but my objective is to make a positive difference, so there has to be complete acceptance of how it is, and an intuitive response appropriate to the objective. My own parents were perfect examples of how not to manage fraternal disputes, so I have learned from their mistakes, and rather than simply let it happen or make it worse by trying to please everyone, I will make an intuitive measured intervention aimed at diffusing rather than exacerbating the situation.

My second issue to sharpen concentration so I can at will put it where I intend. This is the prime challenge of my life experience - if I can do this, then life will be joy indeed. To achieve this, I'm having to learn thoroughly how my mind functions. The obstacle is intense emotions easily triggered. To deactivate them, I'm learning to turn my thoughts off. I can already do this in some circumstances, so the next step is to expand the circumstances. This requires breaking down stimuli both internal and external into the energy it's made of, and perceiving the energy rather than the story my mind instinctively constructs from it. It's an absorbing and fascinating challenge.
