1. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

17th April 1970: Apollo 13 returns safely to Earth
Apollo 13 was the seventh manned mission in the American Apollo space program and the third intended to land on the Moon. The craft was launched on April 11, 1970, at 13:13 CST from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, but the lunar landing was aborted after an oxygen tank exploded two days later.

The Service module, severely crippled, was no longer able to support life, so the crew survived by moving into the lunar module. Already nearly at the moon, the safest move was to simply continue onward to the Moon then "slingshot" around it, using the Moon's gravity to send the spacecraft back towards Earth. Despite great hardship caused by limited power, loss of cabin heat, shortage of potable water, and the need to make makeshift repairs to the carbon dioxide removal system, the crew returned safely to Earth.

After the event, an investigation commission discovered the main cause of the accident:
Damaged Teflon insulation on the wires to the stirring fan inside oxygen tank 2 allowed the wires to short-circuit, setting off a chain of events leading to the explosion of the tank. This damage had been caused by a breakdown in communication between all parties involved in construction - an upgrade in power supply had not been communicated to the subcontractor that made the thermostats which means the thermostats were not also upgraded to handle the higher voltage. This led to overheating in the wires which became damaged and caused the accident.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
It's great to see Missus' morale so high - a good week back at work and a carefree Saturday at home have done the trick. It also helps that she has escaped ex-Daughter's narcissistic clutches for a while and her LOOK AT ME THINK ABOUT ME PAY ATTENTION TO ME DO WHAT I WANT ONLY MY FEELINGS MATTER attitude - ex-Daughter had social engagements elsewhere.

Unfortunately I cannot protect Missus from the two stressors of ex-Daughter and work, because they are also both essential to her wellbeing. I can only monitor the situation and intervene only when absolutely necessary. I will therefore settle for counting my blessings that these two stressors are going through a benign phase with the knock-on benefits for Missus' mental health.

I am also grateful that, though later than I would prefer, I've "got it" as far as life goes - it boils down to having a clear agenda, pursuing it singlemindedly and defending it, with the confidence to know you can win and with the humility to acknowledge your mortality, vulnerability and fallibility. With this learned, and can now just get on with it and enjoy the movie's best part.

I fully expect to outlive Missus, and after that there won't be so much beer and skittles. I will need to throw myself into work, be it the work I want or otherwise, and in the spare times continue to share my wisdom. For all this, this avatar is prepared, content in already having achieved it's prime purpose - to pass on genes and memes.

9. ZEN WISDOM
The greatest tragedy in life is not to die, it is to live as if dead, to let the life within us wither. Toward what goal or achievement are we striving in life? This is the important question to ask ourselves.
