1. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

12th May 1968: The Battle of Coral-Balmoral begins
This battle of the Vietnam war, named after two temporary Australian bases, was significant in that it was fought by predominantly Australian rather than American troops against the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese army.

The Australians had been deployed East of Lai Khe, Binh Duong Province, to cut off communist forces retreating from Saigon after their May offensive there. However the enemy attacked on 12th May before the Australians had completed all their preparations. After being initially caught by surprise, the Australians rallied and pushed back the communists with superior firepower.

This set a pattern for a series of major attacks on Australian positions over the next few weeks, all repulsed with heavy casualties on both sides. The last major attack was against Coral base on 28th May. On 6th June, with the communists retreating into the Vietnamese jungle, the Australian positions were relieved by US and South Vietnamese forces.

The battle was the first time the Australians had clashed with regular North Vietnamese Army and Viet Cong main force units operating in battalion and regimental strength in conventional warfare. During 26 days of fighting the communists sustained heavy losses and were forced to postpone a further attack on Saigon, while 1 ATF also suffered significant casualties. The largest unit-level action of the war for the Australians, today the battle is considered one of the most famous actions fought by the Australian Army during the Vietnam War.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
In a major move I have decided to keep blogging but to de-prioritize it. Rather than making it first priority in the morning, I am fitting it in round other tasks, and have decided to drop it altogether on Wednesday as well as Saturday. I have to weigh-up the effort I'm putting in against the benefits. It's a rather-time consuming affair and whilst I want to keep entertaining my "hardcore" readership of 20 or so, I want to prioritize other things that have a wider reach.

Though conscious of bingeing the previous week, I hadn't put on as much extra weight as I had feared and all my clothes still fit. However exercise is restricted by ligament damage in my right knee which doesn't show any immediate sign of healing. I have settled for the policy of "keep moving gently", working the knee but not giving it anything heavy-duty.

With things being very settled I can return my focus to my prime internal objective of Total Internal Silence - for then I will be truly PRESENT and therefore conscious and at the peak of my power to the maximum extent.

4. TODAY'S QUESTION FOR YOU

8. TRIVIA
Capuchin monkeys use different vocal sounds to identify different types of predators. They have also been seen banging stones together to warn each other of approaching predators.

9. ZEN WISDOM
Only by overcoming life’s problems and obstacles can we become truly strong. If everything always goes smoothly, we will grow complacent and be unable to build a solid foundation for our lives. Only by experiencing suffering ourselves can we understand the suffering of others and deepen our compassion.
