1. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

20th December 69
Vespasian enters Rome to claim the title of emperor

Vespasian had become a popular and effective general during the reign of Nero. In 68, while Vespasian was besieging Jerusalem during the Jewish Great Revolt, Nero was assassinated. A period of chaos followed where emperors Galba and Otho seized power and died in rapid succession, and Vitellius then became emperor.

Vespasian's legions however, dissatisfied with this turn of events, proclaimed Vespasian emperor two months later. Leaving his son Titus to continue suppressing the Jewish revolt, Vespasian forged a pact with Mucianus, the governor of Syria, and Primus, a general in Pannonia. While Mucianus and Primus marched directly on Rome, Vespasian secured Egypt.

Vitellius was defeated and fled with no supporters to Rome where Vespasian entered on 20th December 69, to be approved as emperor by the Roman senate. Vitellius was executed two days later.

Vespasian proved to be one of Rome's most capable emperors. The Jewish revolt was crushed, he expanded Roman territory in Britain, the empire's finance system and the army was reformed, and he built the Colosseum. Vespasian died in 79 and was succeeded by his son Titus, the first time in the history of the empire that a son took over from his father.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
I have begun PINNACLE CHRISTMAS - No Christmas before has been as enjoyable as this one promises to be, and I doubt that the succeeding ones will ever match it - 13 days of leisure (other than catering and laundry) and pleasure in the absence of all tormentors and predators, with three of us in the house who are NICE to each other, love each other and care about each other. Wonderful!

You can't hold on to such times of joy - only feel them pass through you, so I will not grasp or regret, I will let the wave of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity thunder through me, so I can say I experienced perfect true joy and family bliss - at last!

Sometimes, passing circumstances all align just right to give a moment of awesomeness before they move on, and I find myself sitting in such a period. I DON'T have to attend the Weekend Job over Christmas and New Year because they're AT the Weekend! I DON'T have to share Missus with Daughter (bonus: no travel expenses) because Daughter is with the boyfriend, so her malign nastiness cannot affect Missus nor consequently me. Son is going nowhere possibly for the last time at Christmas, so circumstances are as benign as they will ever be! For these thirteen days there is but one focus: ENJOY!!
