1. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

10th December 1684
Isaac Newton's Theory of Gravity is presented to the Royal Society by Edmond Halley

The Royal Society is an elite association of Britain's greatest scientists, founded by King Charles II in 1660. Entry to the society requires outstanding scientific work and nomination by an existing member. Newton had gained entry in 1672 for developing the mathematics of calculus.

In Newton's paper, he presented an explanation of Kepler's laws of planetary motion - that they were due to a force of attraction between solid objects, the force exerted being in proportion the mass of the object - the heavier it was, the more force, (which Newton called gravity) it exerted. He further demonstrated that this force could be quantified and derived from mass and the acceleration of objects towards each other: Force = mass x acceleration.

He also demonstrated that the force between objects was also inversely proportional to the distance between them - the greater the distance, the weaker the force.

He also showed that a small object near a big one that was travelling at a certain speed and direction would not collide with the large object but would go into an ORBIT - and elliptical path around the large object, thus explaining Kepler's laws.

The Theory of Gravity became one of the central planks of modern Physics for explaining the motion of objects. However, an anomaly was discovered in the 19th Century - it could not explain the orbit of the planet Mercury, which did not fit the calculations when all the other planets did. This anomaly was finally explained by Einstein's Theory of Relativity.

Newton's laws and calculations are nevertheless still used for objects not travelling at ultra-high speed or having ultra-high gravity, being easy for Physicists and mathematicians to use and being sufficiently accurate for most Earth-based technologies.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
Learning to play with my new toy, the Amazon Fire HD6, is proving to be time-consuming! Along with re-closing an emotional scar at the benning of the week, it has distracted me from other tasks, but I've now learned enough to put it on one side until the long Christmas break, clear the housework backlog and get in some quality time with Son and Missus.

Having caught up with primal needs, particularly sleep, today is the day I expect balance to be fully restored.

4. TODAY'S QUESTION FOR YOU
Have you got the priorities right?

8. TRIVIA
Under its fur, the skin of a giant panda is black where its fur is black, and pink where its fur is white.

9. ZEN WISDOM
Those who have learned to trust in themselves are then naturally able to believe in the latent capacities of others.
