1. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

23rd December 1990
Slovenia votes for independence

An independence referendum was held in the Republic of Slovenia on 23 December 1990. Both the ruling centre-right coalition and the left-wing opposition supported the referendum and called on voters to support Slovenian independence.

The voters were asked the question: "Should the Republic of Slovenia become an independent and sovereign state?" (Slovene: Ali naj Republika Slovenija postane samostojna in neodvisna država?). The Slovenian Parliament set a threshold for the validity of the plebiscite at 50% and one of all electors (the absolute majority)

On 26 December the results of the referendum were officially proclaimed by France Bučar in the Assembly. 88.5% of all electors (94.8% of those participating) had voted in favour of independence, therefore exceeding the threshold.[5] 4.0% had voted against independence, while 0.9% had cast invalid ballots, and 0.1% had returned their ballots unused. 6.5% of electors did not participate in the elections.

Bučar's announcement obliged the Slovenian authorities to declare the independence of the country within six months. On 25 June 1991 the Basic Constitutional Charter on the Sovereignty and Independence of the Republic of Slovenia was passed and independence from Yugoslavia was declared the following day.

Yugoslavia did not accept this declaration but the government was divided over how to respond and did not fully control the army, which itself was divided. Eventually a "show of force" was decided upon, hoping to scare the Slovenians to back down.

The Yugoslav army began to move to take control of Slovenia on 26th June, but by the next day, rather than back down, the Slovenes were resisting fiercely. With no local support and facing a second front in Croatia, which had also declared independence, and also facing hesitant leadership and mass desertions by non-Serbian troops, the Yugoslav position in Slovenia became impossible.

After ten days, a ceasefire was agreed on the 7th July. Slovenia agreed to delay official independence by three months and the Yugoslav army was evacuated.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
PINNACLE CHRISTMAS: DAY 4 OF 13
Having obtained their gifts, which were going to be OK, both the other two let slip in conversation what they really fancied! This of course led me to wonder why they didn't mention them earlier. Probably they didn't realize they wanted them! Never mind, this will not spoil "Pinnacle Christmas"!

Though I've been enjoying the holiday so far, I'm not spared the duties of carer/housekeeper. I've let the cleaning go but we all still need clean clothes and Missus still needs getting up in the morning, her body clock maintained manually by me. Fortunately, unlike a lot of housekeepers I don't particularly dread the laundry/ironing, and will happily poodle on with it given some form of background entertainment on the Tivo. Missus watching me do it also deepens her appreciation!

I also do all the catering. However I don't forget that its Missus who is currently bringing home most of the bacon. To run the house is therefore only my fair contribution, and is an excellent value price for everything I enjoy in return! Home is currently Shangri-La, and that's well worth the price of a few chores.

8. TRIVIA
The last battle fought at the Great Wall of China was in 1938 during the Sino-Japanese War, which was between the Republic of China and the Empire of Japan. Bullet marks can still be seen in the Wall at Gubeikou.

9. ZEN WISDOM
It would be pointless for a plum blossom to try to remake itself as a cherry blossom, no matter how deeply the plum yearns to do so. The plum is happiest when it blooms as itself in full glory. How much of the color and wonder of life would be lost if it weren’t for our differences.
