1. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

15th December 1939
Gone With The Wind is premiered

One of the most famous movies of all time, it had a very troubled production. Filming was delayed for two years due to Selznick's determination to secure Gable for the role of Rhett Butler, and the "search for Scarlett" led to 1,400 women being interviewed for the part before Vivien Leigh was chosen. The original screenplay was written by Sidney Howard, but underwent many revisions by several writers in an attempt to get it down to a suitable length. The original director, George Cukor, was fired shortly after filming had begun and was replaced by Victor Fleming, who in turn was briefly replaced by Sam Wood while Fleming took some time off due to exhaustion.

On release in December 1939, not all reviews were positive - some reviewers found it dramatically lacking and bloated. The casting was widely praised and many reviewers found Vivien Leigh especially suited to her role as Scarlett. At the 12th Academy Awards, it received ten Academy Awards (eight competitive, two honorary) from thirteen nominations, including wins for Best Picture, Best Director (Victor Fleming), Best Adapted Screenplay (posthumously awarded to Sidney Howard), Best Actress (Vivien Leigh) and Best Supporting Actress (Hattie McDaniel, becoming the first African-American to win an Academy Award). It set records for the total number of wins and nominations at the time. The film was immensely popular, becoming the highest-earning film made up to that point, and retained the record for over a quarter of a century. When adjusted for monetary inflation, it is still the most successful film in box-office history.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
These days consciousness slips easily between character and universal modes. Right now, the character is a generally enjoyable experience to play, but inevitably as all things pass I cannot expect it to stay that way.

Being in character, which is the standard experience, is much more intense than the universal - you are at the centre of a story.  If however you become "lost" in the role, then ultimately your destiny is to lose everything, and the story becomes one of clinging in vain.

The universal is much less intense but is a wholesome continual bliss in which there is no gain or loss, simply energy swirling around. The character doesn't have any substance - energy simply swirls in such a way that the universe can briefly see itself from a single perspective.

This is an extremely rare occurrence - mostly consciousness never rises above human character - only a few characters desiring to know what they really are allow the universe to see itself. Purpose then becomes to pass on this experience so other seeking characters in the future continue the line of universal consciousness, so that the universe continues to grow in understanding about itself.

However, purpose runs deeper than simply the enlightenment of the few receptive characters. Further down the pyramid, the intention is to raise awareness and wellbeing of those receptive who still believe they're individuals, because better wellbeing generally will increase the few who will find enlightenment, so increasing the number of perspectives the universe can see itself from.

As the universe looking though a character it is not easy to keep awake - high levels of focus at the limit of this character's capacity are needed. Ultimately, with age, this particular lens of consciousness will dissipate. It's therefore crucial to record and document for other other seekers to find and awaken.  For those below this highest level of consciousness, it's equally important to leave behind material written in character mode so their wellbeing also can be elevated upwards.

9. ZEN WISDOM
The worst mistake you can make is to give up on yourself and stop challenging yourself for fear of failure. Keep moving forward with a firm eye on the future, telling yourself, “I’ll start from today!” “I’ll start afresh from now, from this very moment!”
