17th March 180: Commodus becomes Roman Emperor
This event has been traditionally seen as the beginning of the decline of the Roman Empire, and was first proposed by historian Edward Gibbon (1723-1792). What is almost certainly true is that with the death of his father Marcus Aurelius, a succession of strong capable Roman Emperors came to an end.
Though it has been postulated that Marcus Aurelius was assassinated to prevent him barring his son from inheriting the throne, the opposite is more likely. Marcus Aurelius doted on his son and broke the tradition of choosing successors on merit by naming his less-than-capable son as his heir and making him co-emperor three years earlier.
Commodus proved to have little interest in running the empire himself, and instead left much of the administration to unpopular favourites. By 190 he was convinced that he was a Demigod a re-named, Rome, the Roman calendar and various institutions after himself.
His chaotic rule and arbitrary justice made many enemies, and in 192 he was assassinated.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
Ooh! I have woken up to Bliss Mode - complete Peace of Mind. The is the ultimate state to be in and I'm profoundly grateful to have had this experience at all. My intention is to make it perpetual, immune to circumstances.
This will be something of a challenge as I am more sensitive than I would prefer. It's not impossible however. It's a question of being focused on the right thing and detaching from everything else - aware of it all, responding to it, but not identifying with it.
It gets easier with time, because with every Bliss Moment you get more familiar with how it feels and it's easier to summon it. I feel enormously privileged - most of mankind will never have this experience at all, let alone to the lengthening an deepening extent that I am.
