1. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

16th March 1978:
The kidnapping of Aldo Moro
The kidnapping and murder of Aldo Moro (Italian: Rapimento Moro) was a seminal event in Italian political history.

On the morning of 16 March 1978, the day on which the new cabinet led by Giulio Andreotti was supposed to have undergone a confidence vote in the Italian Parliament, the car of Aldo Moro, former prime minister and then president of Christian Democracy (Italian: Democrazia Cristiana, or DC, Italy's relative majority party at the time), was assaulted by a group of Red Brigades (Italian: Brigate Rosse, or BR) terrorists in Via Fani in Rome. Firing automatic weapons, the terrorists killed Moro's bodyguards, (two Carabinieri in Moro's car and three policemen in the following car) and kidnapped him.

On 9 May 1978 Moro's body was found in the trunk of a Renault 4 in Via Caetani after 55 days of imprisonment.

At face value, this was a simple politically-motivated crime by a gang of extremists. However due to the complex nature of Italian politics, and the lack of clarity as to who knew and did what in the armed services, a whole raft of conspiracy theories have arisen, involving foreign powers, the Freemasons and the Mafia.

Ten members of the Red Brigade involved were identified. Of these, six were captured, tried and imprisoned within a year. Barbara Belzerani was captured in 1985. An eighth, Rita Algranati, was captured in Cairo in 2004, by which time most of the others had already been released.

The incident marked the end of a longstanding political alliance between the Christian Democrats and the Italian Communist Party (known as the "Historic Compromise") and the rapid decline of Communist political influence in the 1980's. Moro was a major advocate of this alliance, raising suspicion of a foreign plot.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
My life, compared to most others, could hardly be described as "busy" and certainly not stressful, but nevertheless there's always something that needs doing, and with age, relative perception of time is slowing, making time appear to go whiiizzzzzzz!

This is actually no bad thing - you need some stress to stay fully functional. The bodymind is evolved to fight to survive, and without any fight becomes unwell. Life is therefore idyllic, with everything I want and just enough challenge to keep that essential functionality. This is the time to make the maximum possible difference while the opportunity is here.

9. ZEN WISDOM
There will be times in life when you cannot succeed. Or times when hardship seems about to crush you. Such times are inevitable, yet we must never allow our spirits to be broken by them.
