3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
At some point today Missus will phone Daughter. I am hoping that Daughter will just plain not answer or is so obnoxious that Missus puts the phone down on her. Myself and Son would dearly love to drive a wedge between the two of them, not for a malicious reason but because that would be in the best interest of Missus' wellbeing.

Daughter has always been wilfully ignorant of Missus severe mental illness and has never made any allowances for it at all, or the side-effects of her medication - on the contrary, she has threatened Missus wellbeing by her appalling intolerance. I would dearly love to see this threat removed!

Unfortunately, the most likely ongoing outcome is that their relationship will continue in its troubled way. Mother and Daughter are unlikely to abandon each other and Daughter is unlikely to have a change in attitude, as I believe she has an incurable personality disorder.

My plan therefore is watchful containment, intervening when Daughter goes too far, and creating clear blue water in the difference between her treatment at home and at the hands of Daughter.

However, this fly in the ointment of my essentially blissful life is at least taking place on the borders rather than at the centre of my life. Happiness, I have learned, does not involve the absence of challenges but in making a difference my way. That I'm doing, and my basal/default attitude is gratitude.

9. ZEN WISDOM
Illness is not something to feel ashamed of. It is not a sign of misfortune or defeat. Suffering is the fuel of wisdom, and it opens the way to happiness. Through illness, human beings can gain insight into the meaning of life, understand its value and dignity, and strive to lead more fulfilling lives.
