1. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

24th October 2003
The Last Flight of Concorde
The supersonic Concorde jet makes its last commercial passenger flight, traveling at twice the speed of sound from New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport to London’s Heathrow Airport. The British Airways jet carried 100 passengers, including actress Joan Collins, model Christie Brinkley, and an Ohio couple who reportedly paid $60,000 on eBay for two tickets (a roundtrip trans-Atlantic fare typically cost about $9,000). A large crowd of spectators greeted the plane’s arrival in London, which coincided with two other final Concorde flights from Edinburgh and the Bay of Biscay.

Concorde is to date the only supersonic passenger jet ever produced. The reason for this is cost - it is very expensive to develop and maintain large supersonic aircraft and their routes are restricted because of the "sonic boom" noise nuisance. They are therefore currently not economically viable, and will remain so until the technology for cheaper running costs are developed.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
After being "tripped up" by events on Thursday, Friday was somewhat smoother. To begin with an "air-clearing" talk with Son was successful in convincing him that I was not in fact itching to boot him out. He had misinterpreted grumbles and remarks of irritation as full-on resentment. In fact, the only thing about him I resent is HIS resentment over things like noisy bonking (which actually isn't that frequent) and other quirks of his parents.

Subsequent to this reassurance, he was by all accounts a different person on Friday. This was an important learning point for me - the importance of continual proactive encouragement and affirmation. Even as independent adults, we need to hear it from those we associate with, and when we give it out, it reaps benefits. I shall be more attentive to this in future.

The Weekend Job was also smooth. Bitch Colleague has re-emerged but the encounter was not direct. There are no imminent threats to defend against. My main enemy at present is in fact my own time greed. The only response is grounding, acceptance and a clear but flexible purpose - mind in the right place in other words, not allowing focus to wander into the infinity of darkness my memories and imagination has available.

My own wellbeing is an ongoing maintenance task like painting the forth bridge, and I intend to fulfil all my responsibilities for it.

8. TRIVIA
Childhood dreams are shorter than adult dreams and nearly 40% of them are nightmares, which may act as a coping mechanism.

9. ZEN WISDOM
Happiness does not exist as an isolated quality, nor does it conform to a single fixed pattern. Happiness is something that breathes and lives in the relationships between one person and another.
