1. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

17th October 1931
Al Capone is convicted of five counts of tax evasion
Al Capone, probably the world's best known gangster, was born in New York City, the son of Italian immigrants. In his early twenties he moved to Chicago and rose through the ranks of the Five Points Gang, which later became known as the "Chicago Outfit" to become its leader in 1925.

Due to corruption in the municipal government, Capone was for a long time operating above the law, and even had some public popularity as a "Robin Hood" figure. However this popularity declined after the St.Valentine's Day Massacre of 1929 and there were calls from leading citizens for his prosecution.

Finally by 1931, there was enough evidence and he was arrested and convicted for tax evasion and sentenced to 11 years in prison. An appeal failed and he went on to serve eight.

The trial marked the end of Capone's power, not because of the sentence but because he had contracted syphilis which was beginning to cause dementia. He then rapidly became increasingly incapacitated.

The fall from power of Capone did nothing to reduce the power and influence of organized crime in US cities, which continued long into the post-war era. Capone himself finally died of a heart attack caused by a stroke in 1947

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
This morning I slept through to an astonishing 06:45 - virtually the middle of the day for me! No bad thing as it means that circadian rhythms are back with it and brain will be that much more efficient for the downtime.

Focus today will be mainly on emptying the mind - it's taken a long time to fully accept the idea at all levels of consciousness that intuition can run this character better than thought, as the character is a more intense experience than Higher Consciousness. However the downsides of being lost in the character are too great - this character's mind too easily goes off into dark places.

From Higher Consciousness, not only is it easier, simpler and free of suffering, the character undeniably functions better. You also experience that subtle pleasant hum, that Higher Consciousness generates, that you can only experience in the absence of thought. With no more doubts that it's the "place to be", I intend to keep my time there expanding and distractions shrinking.
