1. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY
7th October 2001
THE WAR IN AFGHANISTAN BEGINS
The United States and her allies invade Afghanistan, with the prime objective of the destruction of terror organization Al-Qaeda, who were based in the country as guests of the Taliban, who ruled most of Afghanistan.
Al-Qaeda had launched the terror attacks on the United States known as "9/11" as they were launched on the 11th September 2001, aimed at the destruction of the World Trade Center, The Pentagon and The White House, by flying hijacked planes into them. This had been an incomplete but nevertheless significant success - The World Trade Center was destroyed, and the Pentagon severely damaged. The plane aimed at the White House, United 93, had crashed short of its target after a passenger revolt.
The United States President, George W. Bush, resolved to destroy Al-Qaeda, and with overwhelming public support for a robust response had a "free hand" to act militarily, "Operation Enduring Freedom" was consequently launched, and within a few weeks had driven the Taliban from power and Al-Qaeda from its bases.
This apparent success was in fact only partial - the Taliban rallied and formed an effective guerilla movement - due to popular support among the Pathan-speaking majority, the terrain and Western ignorance of the local culture, it was impossible to defeat this movement militarily. Furthermore, the leaders of Al-Qaeda had escaped and the organization continued as an underground movement.
By attrition, good intelligence and persistence, Al-Qaeda became gradually weakened as a movement, culminating in 2011 in the successful raid on Al-Qaeda's secret compound in Pakistan and the death of its leader Osama Bin-Laden, and the capture of its databses. The Americans and their Allies began a phased withdrawal from Afghanistan, instead training and equipping Afghan opponents of the Taliban to carry on the war, this process being complete in 2014.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
This however leaves Missus in a bad position, torn between us. If Daughter persists in looking for vindication from her mother, which simply isn't coming, and Missus is forced into a corner, she will of course choose me. As well as having truth on my side, I show Missus the consistent selfless kindness, care and devotion that narcissistic Daughter does not.
This is however something I can only observe from a distance. In any case, Daughter is doing a good job of slowly wrecking their relationship by herself. The only part I am playing is making it clear to Missus I do not wish to hear anything about Daughter, good or bad, so I can heal and move on.
