1. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY
4th October 1957
SPUTNIK IS LAUNCHED
Soviet spacecraft Sputnik 1, the first artificial satellite to orbit the Earth, was launched by an R-7 rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome near Tyuratam, Kazakh SSR. Once in orbit, the satellite emitted a simple beeping signal that could be picked up by amateur radio enthusiasts around the world.
Sputnik was a propaganda triumph for the Soviet Union, and a humiliation and embarrassment for the United States. It was a first victory in what became known as the "Space Race", a fierce government-sponsored competition between the two superpowers for supremacy in spaceflight technology. It was motivated not just by the desire for prestige but to gain a potential military advantage.
The Soviet Union continued to maintain the lead in spaceflight innovation until 1965 when superior US financial resources and technical expertise finally began to take effect. Thereafter the Americans drew increasingly further ahead and the Space Race which culminated in the Apollo missions of 1969-1975 to the moon.
Due to manned deep-space exploration offering no military advantage and the ruinous financial cost, the Space Race ended in 1975, and the two countries embarked on cheaper earth-orbit projects, occasionally co-operating, and developing unmanned deep space exploration technology.
The Space Race has left a legacy of Earth communications and weather satellites, and continuing human space presence on the International Space Station. It has also sparked increases in spending on education and research and development, which led to beneficial spin-off technologies.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
I thus gratefully embrace a plain-sailing weekend for the both of us. Calm circumstances facilitate reflection. My own reflection mostly leads to the conclusion that the aspects of my character I would not have chosen, particularly overreactive emotions, and the lack of good person-to-person guidance, have led to my developing skills and abilities that I now use to make a difference with.
This Sunday I want to consider how to take my Practice forward, and generally amplify my reach, impact, and income! I ill meditate, rest and internally reflect and see what emerges!

8. TRIVIA
The vast majority of sexually abused children do not grow up to be offenders themselves. There are additional contributing factors, most of which are inherent in the offender. The offender's circumstances simply triggered a trait already present.
