1. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

12th October 1915
Edith Cavell executed
She is celebrated for saving the lives of soldiers from both sides without discrimination and in helping some 200 Allied soldiers escape from German-occupied Belgium during the First World War, for which she was arrested. She was subsequently court-martialled, found guilty of treason and sentenced to death. Despite international pressure for mercy, she was shot by a German firing squad. Her execution received worldwide condemnation and extensive press coverage.

She is well known for her statement that "patriotism is not enough". Her strong Anglican beliefs propelled her to help all those who needed it, both German and Allied soldiers. She was quoted as saying, "I can’t stop while there are lives to be saved." 12 October is appointed for her commemoration in the Church of England, although this is not a "saint's feast day" in the traditional sense.

Edith Cavell, who was 49 at the time of her execution, was already notable as a pioneer of modern nursing in Belgium.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
If like mine your mind has an unhealthy default, this means that you have to put considerable maintenance into keeping the thing going. My preference would be for my subconscious to organize me, carry out all the essential maintenance by itself and so leave my consciousness free to move forward. Oh the POWER I could wield if this were the case!

However, this does not mean I am resentful. I am in fact profoundly grateful, as after all without good fortune coming my way I could be a very dark twisted individual indeed. As it stands, after having put the necessary time in to maintain myself, I still have adequate time to make a difference and move forward. If I want to carry on making a difference, I need to carry on doing the disciplines, meeting all the primal needs, and getting in the physical and mental maintenance necessary to get the most out of this life experience.

Where acceptance is especially needed is in brain downtime, where full cognitive mode has to be shut down in order for essential maintenance to be carried out, which for me is six hours full sleep time and one hour in meditation. Then when fully conscious, keeping focus on a tight leash requires all the other disciplines I have learned over the years.

In short, in order to experience a fulfilling life that makes the most difference, and to elevate Consciousness above character, I can never afford to just drift, because drifting always ends up in bad places! What it took to get to this place of happiness and fulfilment, it takes to stay here!

Chicago gangster Al Capone (1899-1947), in one of his sporadic attempts at public relations, opened a soup kitchen during the Great Depression. For millions, soup kitchens provided the only food they would see all day.
