1. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY
10th July 1645: The Battle of Langport
On 14 June 1645, the main body of the New Model Army under Sir Thomas Fairfax, with Oliver Cromwell as lieutenant general of horse, had won the decisive Battle of Naseby, destroying Charles's main army. After the Royalist garrison of Leicester surrendered four days later, the New Model Army was free to march to the relief of Taunton.
The army marched first south and then west, keeping near the coast so as to keep touch with Parliament's navy. On 4 July it reached Beaminster, where Fairfax learned that the Royalists commanded by Lord George Goring had abandoned the siege of Taunton and was retreating towards the Royalist stronghold at Bridgwater. The Royalists were outnumbered by Fairfax's army, and their discipline was poor, mainly because a succession of lax Royalist commanders had allowed their men too much license to pillage, which also alienated many of the local people.
Fairfax was joined by Weldon's New Model detachment from Taunton and started in pursuit. On 8 July, Fairfax captured Yeovil at the western end of the Royalists' line. The Royalists abandoned the line of the river, and Fairfax crossed to the north side of the River Yeo. He sent another Parliamentarian force (part of the army of the "Western Association" under Major General Edward Massie) to deal with an attempted diversion in the direction of Taunton by some of Goring's cavalry under George Porter, a notoriously unreliable officer. Porter's men failed to post proper sentries and outposts, and were taken by surprise by Massie and destroyed at Isle Abbots in the early hours of 9 July.
Fairfax had meanwhile advanced in pursuit of Goring, and encountered Goring's main position at Langport late on 9 July. On 10th July, the Parliamentarian cavalry pounced on Goring's rearguard, broke through and attacked and detroyed Goring's own cavalry. With more Parliamentarian forces arriving, Royalist morale collapsed and their army fled the field. Many fleeing soldiers were attacked by local vigilantes (clubmen) keen to protect their properties from soldiers on both sides.
What remained of Goring's cavalry fled to Barnstaple. With no Royalist field army left in the West Country, it was now a case of taking the remaining Royalist strongholds. Bridgewater fell on July 23. Sherborne fell on 17th August and Bristol on the 10th September. In less than a year all Royalist resistance ceased and the war was over.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
I would love to say how fabulously brilliant I've been at achieving blissful superconsciousness, but the reality is that Physics and circumstances ordained it. I am fully aware of how fragile this avatar is and that my bliss is mainly because shit DIDN'T happen. I'm also aware that this bliss will pass and could do so at any moment. My objective therefore is to "make hay while the sun shines", enjoying gratefully every moment, making a difference and proliferating memes while the window of opportunity remains open.
It's been truly awesome to see the universe as it is as far as it can be seen from a single trajectory in spacetime. Best of all has been to get life's greatest prize - peace of mind. I understand how the very fact that energy polarizes into into positive and negative makes all things possible. Peace of mind therefore comes not from the absence of darkness, but by sitting on the fulcrum.
At some point, circumstances will pull my awareness down from this lofty view, but until then I'm going to make the absolute best of it.
