3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
A smooth shift 1 at the Weekend Job gave me ample opportunity to practice Total Internal Silence - the elimination of superfluous thought. It takes intense concentration! It is getting progressively easier though as I am learning to focus on the pleasure of a still mind. Focusing on that bliss keeps focus itself in place, by the pleasure of being stimulated by it.

The fundamental importance of meditation in mental development is now very clear to me. It is in the stillness of a meditative trance that you experience for the first time that consciousness itself gives off a pleasant "hum" - the ultimate drug turns out to be being itself, but only through deep meditation will you ever know it's there.

I think that if I had a good teacher, rather than have to discover all this for myself, I could have reached this point of development years ago. On the other hand, having struggled solo, this will make me a good teacher of others.

9. ZEN WISDOM
The two wheels that carry dialogue forward are a belief that everyone possesses goodness within, and a spirit of unflagging determination to tap and draw out that goodness. The dialogue ends when you no longer believe in the goodness of the other.
