3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
I often feel like I am in the ideal viewing position to witness the Universe. I am no longer young but not infirm. I am not so rich as to be lost in decadence, nor so poor that life is solely preoccupied with survival. I am not so happy that I can't relate to the unhappy, yet not so sad that my life is crippled. I am loved, hated, unknown and everything inbetween. I am capable of supreme heroism and the foulest evil.

I am a living witness to the Information Revolution, with the entire world's knowledge at my fingertips, and was there at the beginning. My life knows joy and sadness in equal measure, as well as peace and anger, love and hate, success and defeat, fulfilment and frustration, madness and Enlightenment. I know people who have inspired all these experiences.

In short, I feel like I am witnessing everything from the ideal viewing platform, the best seat in the house. My conclusion? Life is the ultimate rollercoaster virtual reality game. It's purpose? Simply to experience. You are the Universe experiencing itself! The experience of any individual life is short and temporary, so to get the most out of it you need to pay attention while it's happening and leave behind something useful for the characters beside you and after you that they can use.

In this particular character's experience, the sadness of failed relationships is balanced with the spectacular success of the ones that are working. Son and Missus are sources of endless joy and, knowing all things good and bad will pass, I am savouring every precious moment.

Relative happiness is happiness that depends on things outside ourselves, such as affluence or social standing. While the happiness such things bring us is certainly real, it shatters easily when external conditions alter. Absolute happiness, on the other hand, is something we must find within. It means establishing a state of life in which we are never defeated by difficulties, and where just being alive is a source of great joy.
