3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
With Son now an adult, he is having to learn an important adult lesson - you can't just stop when things get shitty, because of all your commitments and responsibilities. Rejected by the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland with no explanation, he still has to carry on regardless with his college work and prepare for his Birmingham audition.

He is very conscious, bless him, of how we as parents have borrowed heavily to fund his Conservatoire applications (unlike Daughter who never showed a shred of gratitude for my investments in her). Of course we as loving parents have no regrets whatsoever at giving him a shot at the Big Time, however risky that may be. His success was never in our hands, only to give him the opportunities. Whether or not he succeeds is not really the point from our point of view - it's that we did the best we could to help him.

I am in fact very proud that all my training is now being put to the very best effect - helping Son get through hard times, setbacks and disappointments, knowing exactly what, and equally important what not to say, something my own parents, lost in their own issues, were and are utterly clueless about.

I got absolutely no wise guidance at all from any of those normally expected to give it, and had to seek it myself. I did, and with some much-appreciated practical help, I survived all the traumas, scarred but stronger. I now have two people for whom my guidance and support is absolutely crucial. It's a highly rewarding and even enjoyable role to play.

9. ZEN WISDOM
No matter what the state of society or the times, each of us can contribute to peace in our immediate environment. We can do this by encouraging even one young person and enabling them to tap into their potential.
