3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
The nuclear family are three bizarrely different personalities. Missus is a childlike loving being utterly devoted and in love with me, something I relish daily. Daughter is a narcissist who sees the world completely in terms of how it serves her, an attitude that I find frankly repugnant. Son is the most interesting experience of all, a virtual clone of me. Dealing with him is like dealing with a younger version of me in a parallel universe.

Consequently, the relationship is deeply fulfilling, absolutely the polar opposite of my relationship with my own father, a man who I look upon with the most profound disappointment. Son completely shares my views of the other blood relatives, with the single difference that he also looks upon his mother with a sense of disappointment, albeit mixed with a sense of concern.

Of late my own ambitions and intentions have taken second place to support that of Son. In his ambitions to become an opera singer, we are both having to deal with the bombshell that we have wasted considerable amounts of money and time trying to get him into a Conservatoire. It transpires that he is simply not ready. Having no experience or connections in this field, we are having to learn the hard way.

Son is now having to learn the necessity of persistence and perseverance, and my role in supporting him through painful lessons is proving crucial. Though not in a way I would have preferred, I am most definitely fulfilling my chosen role of making a difference.
