1. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

2nd January 1963
The Battle of Ap Bac - the first VietCong victory

The Battle of Ấp Bắc was a major battle fought on January 2, 1963, during the Vietnam War. To destroy a detected VietCong force, the South Vietnamese and their US advisers planned to attack Ap Tan Thoi from three directions.

On the morning of January 2, 1963, the South Vietnamese Civil Guards spearheaded the attack by marching toward Ap Tan Thoi from the south. However, when they reached the hamlet of Ap Bac, they were immediately pinned down by elements of the Viet Cong 261st Battalion. Shortly afterwards, three companies of the 11th Infantry Regiment were committed into battle in northern Ap Tan Thoi, but they too could not overcome the VietCong soldiers who had entrenched themselves in the area. Just before midday, further reinforcements were flown in from Tan Hiep. The fifteen US helicopters ferrying the troops were riddled by Viet Cong gunfire and five helicopters were lost as a result.

The ARVN 4th Mechanized Rifle Squadron was then deployed to rescue the South Vietnamese soldiers and US aircrews who were trapped in the southwestern end of Ap Bac, but the Viet Cong stood their ground and killed more than a dozen South Vietnamese the process. Late in the afternoon, the ARVN 8th Airborne Battalion was dropped onto the battlefield but the paratroopers were pinned down and could not break the NLF's line of defence. Under the cover of darkness the Viet Cong withdrew from the battlefield, having won their first major victory.

After a year of defeat in 1962, this victory was a major morale boost to the VietCong, and proved to themselves and the Vietnamese population that they were capable of winning against the well-equipped and US-funded ARVN (South Vietnamese army)

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
So, holidays are over! I very much enjoyed them but I am now ready to in every sense get back to work fulfilling my purpose. Total indulgence of preferences is harmful to wellbeing - there must be balance an discipline in order to lead the most fulfilling life.

I have learned that the most fundamental discipline of all, the "discipline of disciplines" is FOCUS. Every second of unfocused consciousness is wasted life. The only times the mind is best UNfocused are rest-times, in sleep and meditation, for essential maintenance.

Without focus, this mind for one ends up in all kinds of dark unhelpful places. Every conscious moment, I want to be fulfilling my life-purpose. I know exactly what to do - to GRATEFULLY PAY ATTENTION ON WHAT I'M CREATING. I can rely on my intuition for most decision-making, freeing up my consciousness to be entirely preoccupied with intention rather than pointless time-wasting on the infinity of possible outcomes. Outcomes require only responses and fresh intentions!

When you are focused and you stop wasting brainpower on things beyond your control, consciousness becomes wonderfully clear and calm - you feel the pleasant "hum" of energy that consciousness itself emits. Life becomes simple. So then, let's do it!

9. ZEN WISDOM
Even if you are naturally introverted, make an effort to meet with people. Interaction with others opens up new and exciting possibilities. Meeting people stimulates our minds, gives us energy, leads to more new encounters and infinitely expands our life and our world.
