1. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

6th January 1912

German geophysicist Alfred Wegener first presents his theory of continental drift.
Alfred Wegener first presented his hypothesis that the continents had once formed a single landmass, called Pangea, before breaking apart and drifting to their present locations to the German Geological Society on 6 January 1912

Wegener was the first to use the phrase "continental drift" (in German "die Verschiebung der Kontinente" – translated into English in 1922) and formally publish the hypothesis that the continents had somehow "drifted" apart. Although he presented much evidence for continental drift, he was unable to provide a convincing explanation for the physical processes which might have caused this drift. His suggestion that the continents had been pulled apart by the centrifugal pseudoforce (Polflucht) of the Earth's rotation or by a small component of astronomical precession was rejected as calculations showed that the force was not sufficient. The Polflucht hypothesis was also studied by Paul Sophus Epstein in 1920 and found to be implausible.

The theory of continental drift was not accepted for many years. One problem was that a plausible driving force was missing. A second problem was that Wegener's estimate of the velocity of continental motion, 250 cm/year, was implausibly high.[ (The currently accepted rate for the separation of the Americas from Europe and Africa is about 2.5 cm/year). And it did not help that Wegener was not a geologist. Other geologists also believed that the evidence that Wegener had provided was not sufficient.

It was only with improved detection technology that a supporting theory, plate tectonics, proved Wegner's theory to be be valid, and the evidence now accumulated is overwhelming. By the end of the 1960's, continental drift was the generally accepted theory of Earth's natural history.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
The life of the character continues on its course, and as is now the norm, there's never as much time as would be preferred! Vacuuming fell off the end of the list again and is now scheduled for Thursday.

There is however, complete acceptance of the short and ephemeral nature of a lifespan, and the focus is on getting the maximum bang for its buck. In this, this character is being successful, offloading his learning and wisdom as much as possible. Thanks to the information revolution and the existence of cyberspace, my memes are successfully passed on and will continue beyond this character's life.

Though I have my own goals I continue to press on towards, the principal reason for my continued existence is that Son and Missus need me. It is essential that I outlive Missus because her life without me would be bleak and unhappy. Son is not yet settled on a clear path and needs a rock to fall back on. To these individuals, I am extremely important - they are china in my hands. I take this responsibility very seriously and as a great privilege.
