1. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

26th January 1699

The Treaty of Karlowitz is signed
Signed at Sremski Karlovci in modern-day Serbia, concluding the Austro-Ottoman War of 1683–97 in which the Ottoman side had been defeated at the Battle of Zenta. It marked the end of Ottoman control in central Europe and the beginning of the empire's decline, with their first major territorial losses after centuries of expansion, and established the Habsburg Monarchy as the dominant power in Central and southeast Europe.

On the basis of uti possidetis, the treaty confirmed the then-current territorial holdings of each power. The Habsburgs received from the Ottomans the Eğri Eyalet, Varat Eyalet, much of the Budin Eyalet, the northern part of the Temeşvar Eyalet and parts of the Bosnia Eyalet. This corresponded to much of Hungary, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Slavonia. The Principality of Transylvania remained nominally independent but was subject to the direct rule of Austrian governors. Poland recovered Podolia, including the dismantled fortress at Kamaniçe. Venice obtained most of Dalmatia along with the Morea (the Peloponnese peninsula of southern Greece), though the Morea was restored to the Turks within 20 years by the Treaty of Passarowitz. There was no agreement about the Holy Sepulchre, although it was discussed in Karlowitz.[

The Ottomans retained Belgrade, the Banat of Temesvár (modern Timișoara), Wallachia and Moldavia. Negotiations with Muscovy for a further year under a truce agreed at Karlowitz culminated in the Treaty of Constantinople of 1700, whereby the Sultan ceded the Azov region to Peter the Great. Although Muscovy had to return these territories eleven years later following the failed Prut River Campaign and the Treaty of the Prut in 1711.

Commissions were set up to devise the new borders between the Austrians and the Turks, with some parts disputed until 1703. Largely through the efforts of the Habsburg commissioner Luigi Ferdinando Marsigli, the Croatian and Bihać borders were agreed by mid-1700 and that at Temesvár by early 1701, leading to a border demarcated by physical landmarks for the first time.

The acquisition of some 60,000 square miles (160,000 km2) of Hungarian territories at Karlowitz and of the Banat of Temesvár 18 years later, at Passarowitz, led the Austrian Empire of the Habsburgs to its largest extent, cementing Austria as a dominant regional power.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
I have found that the best way to cure an unhealthy response or compulsion is simply not to have the sources in the house! This applies equally to things and people that you like and don't like but have in common causing an unwanted behaviour or feeling. Avoidance is absolutely the cheapest and best cure!

I have just finished off the Christmas toffee, and it will not be replaced! For the same reason I don't normally have milk chocolate, biscuits, sweets or crisps in the house. Rather than having to work hard at managing a compulsion, it's a lot cheaper and easier just to not have the source around!

A more wholesome compulsion I have observed with interest is my son falling in love - the head-over-heels, all-the-way, hopelessly-devoted kind of love. All previous ambition has gone in the bin to serve that love. All efforts are now devoted to setting up a home and family. It turns out he's not much different from most folks - that's what most folks want. However, I'm not sure "want" is the best word - I think that love is something that invades your mind and takes it over - you don't really have a choice!

I have that certain selfish disappointment a lot of parents feel when they see love scuppering your wish to have a child prodigy, but if your love your child, their happiness and wellbeing is paramount. As a therapist, I also believe that satisfying your primal needs is crucial to that wellbeing. Most of us are sexual beings who need another to complete us - it is foolish to deny or fight it! Only once your primal needs are met is your mind free to experience fulfilment. That fulfilment usually comes through surviving a struggle and passing on your wisdom, and getting some recognition for it.

8. TRIVIA
Called “re-entrants,” dolphins once lived on land and looked and behaved something like a small wolf but with five hoof-like toes on each foot instead claws. Some dolphins still have hair on their heads and the Amazon River dolphin has hair on its beak. Dolphins also have remnant finger bones in their flippers, a forearm, wrists, and a few remnant leg bones deep inside their bodies.

9. ZEN WISDOM
Alone, one’s suffering only deepens. Human beings need to be with and among other human beings. Engagement with others forges our character and enriches us.
