1. THIS DAY IN WORLD WAR 2 (2nd November1942)

In Egypt... At El Alamein, British tanks break through Axis minefields and engage German tanks. Though losses are heavy and equal, Montgomery can afford them and Rommel cannot. Rommel orders the Ariete Division north to reinforce the coastal sector.

In Gibraltar... A new RAF section, Eastern Air Command, is created to support the British 1st Army for the forthcoming Operation Torch.

In the Arctic... British vessel Empire Gilbert sunk by U-586

In the Atlantic... In a disastrous day for Allied shipping, 13 freighters are lost to Axis submarines.

In the Indian Ocean... British vessel Llandilo sunk by U-172. Greek vessel Aegeus sunk by U-177.

In Madagascar... Detachment of King's African Rifles occupies Manakara.

In Papua New Guinea... The Australian 25th Infantry Brigade enters Kokoda two days after a Japanese withdrawal.

In the Pacific... On Guadalcanal, elements of the US 7th Marine Regiment move eastward toward Koli Point, which is reinforced overnight by the Japanese.
Japanese vessel Yasukawa Maru sunk by US 5th Air Force B-17 bombers off New Britain.
USN submarine Tambor conducts minelaying operations in Hainan Strait.
USN submarine Tautog conducts minelaying operations off French Indochina.
Japanese vessel Gifu Maru sunk by USN submarine Seawolf off Mindanao.

2. TODAY IN MY LIFE
Blogging first thing. A short missus time before shift 1 of the Weekend Job. Comedy night on the TV late evening.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
My lessons over the past couple of days have been all about computing, with implications for life in general. The "bottom-line" learning point was that if you keep copying what you did before, what you're doing now won't work. Sometimes you have start from scratch if you want it to happen!

Son was given his birthday stuff early as I'll be at the Weekend Job when he wakes up today. It's been a priviledge to be there for him through a distressing time as his band is going in a different direction to his own and for the first time he saw his mum have a psychotic episode.

I was able to help him see that nothing he's going through is fatal and he will emerge stronger. A few nice birthday goodies also sweetened things for him! He's learning that once you accept how things are you can then move on in the right direction.
