1. THIS DAY IN WORLD WAR 2 (8th NOVEMBER 1942)
In the Arctic... Soviet submarine M-121 vanishes, assumed sunk by a mine.

In Egypt... The British 8th army takes control of Mersa Matruh.

In Vichy French North Africa... Operation Torch begins.
Western Task Force lands US forces at Casablanca, Safi, and Port Lyautey.
Safi is taken.
Vichy French patrol boat Victoria is captured by USN minesweeper Hogan off Cape Fedala.
Vichy French submarines La Psyche, La Sybille, Oreade, and Amphitrite sunk by US aircraft at Casablanca.
Vichy French destroyer Boulonnaise, liner Savoie Marseille, and 3 freighters sunk at Casablanca. 
18 Vichy French fighters shot down over Morocco.
Vichy French vessel Ville du Havre sunk by USN submarine Herring off French Morocco.
Center Task Force lands US forces in Oran sector.
RN cutters Hartland and Walney sunk with heavy casualties whilst attempting to enter Oran harbour.
East of Oran, Tafaraoui is captured.
USAAF 60th Troop Carrier Group, bringing 2nd Battalion of US 509th Parachute Regiment from UK, arrives completely scattered and suffers heavy losses.
Vichy French lose 5 warships and 6 submarines at Oran.
Eastern Task Force lands Allied forces in the Algiers sector
RN destroyers Broke and Malcolm with elements of 135th Infantry Regiment of US 34th Infantry Division successfully run into Algiers and capture the harbour, but RN destroyer Broke is sunk with heavy casualties to the landing party. In Algiers, Vichy French Admiral Darlan agrees to a local ceasefire.


In response to the landings, the first Luftwaffe aircraft land in Tunisia without Vichy French opposition.

In Vichy France... Marshal Petain makes a speech in response to Operation Torch: "We have been attacked and will defend ourselves." Vichy France breaks off diplomatic relations with the United States.

In Berlin... Hitler anounces the capture of Stalingrad, despite the fact that Soviet forces still hold a sector of the city. He also offers to guarantee French territory if Vichy will declare war on the United States.

In the Atlantic... Three Allied freighters are sunk by U-Boats. All available U-boats are ordered to proceed to positions off French Morocco and Gibraltar in response to Operation Torch.

In the Pacific... On Guadalcanal, five IJN destroyers arrive with reinforcements and supplies for the Japanese troops.
US vessel Edgar Allen Poe heavily damaged by IJN submarine I-21 off Noumea and subsequently written off.
IJN gunboat Keiko Maru sunk by USN submarine Seawolf off Mindanao Island.

In Papua New Guinea... Heavy fighting around Gorari on the Kokoda Track.

In the Indian Ocean... Panamanian vessel Plaudit sunk by U-181

Shopping in the morning. Client prep, session and follow-up in the afternoon. With missus bringing up her breakfast and resting/recovering, evening will be, er, less demanding, so I can enjoy more me time and conserve Tadalafil supplies.

I am in the enviable position of doing what I love and getting paid for it - hypnotherapy in my case. It fires the blood and brings me joy! This in combination with the appreciation I receive from nearest and dearest, low stress and abundant creature comforts makes me most grateful indeed.
