1. THIS DAY IN WORLD WAR 2 (4th NOVEMBER 1942)
In the Arctic... Soviet vessel Dekabrist sunk by Luftwaffe aircraft. US vessel William Clark sunk by U-354.

In London... First meeting of the Cabinet Anti-U-Boat Warfare Committee, chaired by Churchill, formed to address the devasting loss of freighters in the Atlantic to U-Boats.

In Egypt... At El Alamein, a decisive breakthrough is achieved. 10th Corps of British 8th Army breaks through Panzer Army Afrika defences, the Italian Ariete, Littorio, and Trieste Divisions destroyed, German General Thoma is captured, and the Germans are in full retreat. It is a decisive British victory. The cautious General Montgomery decides not to hotly pursue the retreating German forces, although they are strafed and harassed by the Desert Air Force.

In the Atlantic... US submarines are deployed off key ports in Morocco for reconaissance prior to Operation Torch.
In another bad day for Allied shipping, six more freighters are lost to Axis submarines, although U-132 is also sunk after getting too close to an exploding freighter, SS Hatimura.

In the Pacific... On Guadalcanal, the US 8th Marine Regiment lands at Lunga Point, and the US 147th Infantry Regiment, Marine Raider battalion, and Seabees land at Aola Bay in an abortive attempt to construct new airfield. The 2nd Marine Regiment prepares positions around Point Cruz while the 5th Marine Regiment returns to the Lunga perimeter. USN cruisers Helena and San Francisco and destroyer Sterett bombard Japanese positions at Koli Point prior to a planned attack.

In the Indian Ocean...
U-178 sinks Norwegian vessel Hai Hing and British vessel Trekieve.

Today's Air Raids...
Benghazi, Libya by RAF and US MEAF aircraft.
Papua New Guinea Raids on Salamaua and Aileu and Japanese positions around Oivi by US 5th Air Force.

2. TODAY IN MY LIFE

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
With personal disciplines somewhat neglected over half-term, restoration of balance will begin today by prolonged meditation. I am sadly not one of those people who has profound experiences during meditation. During the trance state my experiences are the same as most people experience on the cusp between sleeping and waking (the hypnagogic state). It's a very calm peaceful experience where you just "are", and sense of time becomes distorted - what feels like a minute in a trance can be an hour in real time.

The principle benefit of doing it in my case is anger management and perspective. I am much more able to recover quickly from anger triggers, usually in a few minutes or better, and I am much better able to place my focus where I consciously want it. I am also better able to distinguish the significant from the insignificant and discern the underlying causes of things. This means that I make better life decisions and derive much more enjoyment from the life experience.
