1. THIS DAY IN WORLD WAR 2 (24th May 1943)
On the Russian Front...
Soviet North Caucasus Front attacking in the Kuban

From Berlin...
Admiral Doenitz suspends U-boat operations against Allied convoys in the North Atlantic due to dwindling success and heavy losses, marking the turning point in the Battle of the Atlantic.

The Kriegsmarine objective had been to sink ships faster than the Allies could build them, causing the British to starve. In fact, the reverse was now happening - submarines were being sunk faster than they could be replaced.

As well as the Americans now producing ships in vast numbers, the Allies had introduced better tactics and technology against which the Kriegsmarine had no answer. The Kriegsmarine was now powerless to prevent the massive build-up of men and materials in Europe that would be used against the German army.

On the US West Coast...
Carrier USS Bunker Hill is commissioned for service.

In the Pacific...
On Attu Island, despite heavy air support, US 7th Infantry Division are still held at Fish Hook Ridge

In China...
Battle of Western Hupei (South Yangtze Operation): Japanese 11th Army breaks through 10th Army Group of Chinese 6th War Area, captures Changyang, and pursues to the northwest, destroying defensive positions west of Ichang

Pantelleria Island on the Italian garrison by USAAF

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
Thursday was one of those blissful days where everything went to plan and as I sat surrounded by all the creature comforts I have accumulated, I was overwhelmed by gratitude - there was simply nothing left to want! In my life experience I intend to use this abundance to make a positive difference, for that is the purpose I have chosen for myself.

I have learned to be selective. Since my character is limited in time and space, so is what can be achieved, so I will target my energies to where they will make the most difference, and defend myself against people and forces that would undermine my effectiveness.

Having known what it's like to be lost, lonely, confused and frightened, I am profoundly and gratefully relieved to know what I'm doing and why I'm doing it. All I need to do know is to keep my attention on my intention.

It's also important to frequently withdraw from the character I play and simply be what I really am. My spiritual objective is to no longer be distracted from that awareness - for it to be uninterrupted and continual.

Because at least some of the characters are simply expressions of the real "me", no evangelism is necessary, but part of the fulfilment comes from this character being a source of knowledge to which others can access. How many characters become enlightened is, in the overall scheme of things, unimportant, so long as the opportunity is always there while self-conscious characters exist.

If you reach the state of enlightenment, you experience what can only be described as a subtle ecstacy, where consciousness itself is experienced in the form of a very pleasant "hum", the noise of which is most often described as the syllable OM in Sanskrit. It is not an experience you can grip and hold - in fact the reverse is true - you let go of everything and simply pay it attention. You then experience life's ultimate prize - peace of mind.

8. TRIVIA
Wolves were once abundant, large and fierce in Britain, a constant menace to both people and livestock. As people grew more numerous, more organized and developed better weapons, wolf populations began to decline.

King Edward I (1272 - 1307) ordered the extermination of all Wolves in England and Wales. Though there were successful wolf-hunts, the majority of wolves were killed by traps. The policy was continued by his successors and by the end of the 15th Century had completely succeeded.

The last documented sighting - and killing of a wolf in England was at Humphrey Head, Kent, during the rein of Henry VII (1485-1509)

Wolves continued to live in the more rugged and less populated terrain of the Highlands of Scotland. Here too however, as human population expanded, Wolves continued to decline. By the end of the 17th Century, Wolves were probably extinct in Britain. The last documented killing of a wolf was in 1680 by Sir Ewan Cameron in Killiecrankie (Perthshire). Reported sightings however continued until 1888.

Since 1999 there has been a campaign to reintroduce Wolves into Scotland to control the deer population and boost tourism, but it has been fiercely opposed by local crofters and to date no such introduction has occurred.
