3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
I was briefly studying the Hindu concept of Chitta yesterday, which left quite an impression as it has strong similarities to Western concepts of the subconscious. In Hinduism, Chitta is like the muddy bed of a lake. When the mind is restless, the lake, analagous with consciousness, is stirred up. Thousands of ideas can then be released into consciousness from Chitta and consciousness becomes cloudy, confused and chaotic.

The Hindu concept of managing Chitta is very similar to Buddhist ideas - one simply observes the arising of thoughts from Chitta and their return to it. One cannot both observe a thought and act on it, so observing prevents the thought becoming energized. By turning your attention inward on the arising of Chitta, thoughts settle and the mind becomes calm and clear allowing higher states of awareness to be achieved.

I have been inspired to serious focus on the first principle I teach my clients - the calming of the mind. Clearing my own mind of random thought is now a priority.
