3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
Negative experiences have an important benefit - they make you stronger. Mine comes mainly from Daughter, who is wonderfully unemcumbered by any trace of empathy and will therefore quite happily tear into my rawest nerves if over any issue she doesn't get her way. She has for this reason been pushed out to a safe distance for the time being with (for her) an expensive price-tag for re-admittance.

My ego is of itself defenceless against such ruthlessness. When things are abundant and going well, your awareness tends to be drawn into the ego because that's where the maximum sensation of pleasure is. That's all very fine until bombshells, marauders and predators arrive, because unfortunately the ego is also where maximum suffering is.

No matter how spiritually-educated you are, earthly bliss will soon draw you into your ego. Pain has a wonderful way of re-awkening you. The practices that draw your focus back to Higher Awareness get neglected after a diet of pleasure and I find myself needing to "re-learn" them. This is no bad thing. Your awareness becomes sharper as a result and you have a deeper appreciation of the necessity of spiritual disciplines.

Pleasure is nice but softens you. Pain, if it doesn't kill you, makes you stronger. To fully participate in the Life Experience without getting lost in it, you need a pain-toughened skin and a soft heart.
