1. THIS DAY IN WORLD WAR 2 (13th May 1943)
In the Black Sea...
Soviet cutters bombard Anapa harbour in the Kuban

In the "Wolf's Lair", East Prussia...
Chief of production Albert Speer reports increased armaments production levels to Hitler.

In the North Sea...
Kriegsmarine minesweeper M-8 sunk by RN MTBs

In Tirana, Albania...
The Albanian puppet leader resigns and the Italians form new government led, again, by Eqrem Libohova.

In the Mediterranean...
Italian vessels Sant Anna M. and Adelina sunk by RN submarine Shakespeare

In Tunisia...
Italian General Giovanni Messe, newly promoted to Field Marshal, along with all remaining Axis forces in Tunisia, surrenders. General Sir Harold Alexander is able to report to Churchill the successful conclusion of the Tunisian campaign and the elimination of all Axis presence in Africa. Approximately 250,000 Axis POWs are taken.

The decision to make a stand in Tunisia after the Allied landings in Algeria and Morocco was an expensive mistake by the Axis. Allied air and sea superiority prevented adaequate resupply and this itself led to expensive losses of ships and aircraft, as well all the men and material lost in Tunisia itself. Italy as a direct consequence of entering the war had now lost all her overseas possessions and the situation undermined Mussolini's grip on power in Italy.

In the Atlantic...
US vessel Nickeliner and Cuban vessel Mambi are sunk by U-176
U-753 is sunk by Allied warships and aircraft

In Washington DC...
Exiled Czech President Benes addresses Congress
At the Trident Conference, Combined Chiefs of Staff approves the final plan for the invasion of Sicily.

In the Pacific...
On Attu Island, Southern Force of US 7th Infantry Division unsuccessfully attack toward Jarmin Pass. Japanese forces counterattack Northern Force at Hill X.

USN Task Force 18 bombards Munda on New Georgia Island and Vila on Kolombangara Island

In Tokyo...
Foreign Minister Shigemitsu and Marquis Kido discuss ways of ending the war, the first time anything other than outright victory is openly discussed.

In China...
Battle of Western Hupei (South Yangtze Operation): Japanese 11th Army attacking 10th Army Group of Chinese 6th War Area around Chichiang and Nuanshuichieh.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
A new week and it begins from a position of strength and opportunity. On the human level I am looking to develop both my business and Son's band and keep on top of housekeeping.

On a spiritual level, I am aiming to keep my awareness levels high, mind mastered and internally silent, allowing intuition rather than random thought to run my experience, making it robust in the face of changes and challenges. I already have peace of mind and gratitude as predominant experiences, and my aim is to experience them uninterrupted.

To achieve this, once you have the right technique, is simply a matter of clear intention and disciplined concentration. I am tempted to say that perpetual bliss is "within my grasp" but in fact the mental act of grasping actually drives it away. It is closer to say that total internal stillness is very close.
