1. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

1st March 1692

The Salem Witch Trials begin
The Salem witch trials were a series of hearings and prosecutions of people accused of witchcraft in colonial Massachusetts between February 1692 and May 1693. The trials resulted in the executions of twenty people, fourteen of them women, and all but one by hanging. Twelve other women had previously been executed in Massachusetts and Connecticut during the 17th century. Despite being generally known as the Salem witch trials, the preliminary hearings in 1692 were conducted in several towns: Salem Village (now Danvers), Salem Town, Ipswich and Andover. The most infamous trials were conducted by the Court of Oyer and Terminer in 1692 in Salem Town.

The episode is one of the Colonial America's most notorious cases of mass hysteria, and has been used in political rhetoric and popular literature as a vivid cautionary tale about the dangers of isolationism, religious extremism, false accusations and lapses in due process. It was not unique, but simply a Colonial American example of the much broader phenomenon of witch trials in the Early Modern period.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
I have been blessed with an abundance of time today and do not intend to waste it! It's a golden opportunity to do things that are important but not urgent. I will also enjoy a long meditation of up to two hours.

My new mindfulness technique, which occurred to me in a flash of brilliance, is already proving spectacularly successful and I've already started to teach it to clients. In the coming months, I expect to see the elimination of Daymares (nightmarish daydreams) from my internal experience.

I fear a deterioration in eyesight continues, with standard text now slightly out of focus at ANY distance. I will now need specs for distance reading as well as closeup reading. An investment in more specs will be made tomorrow!

A long-standing dispute between Britain and Greece centers around the Elgin Marbles (the Greeks prefer to call them the Parthenon Marbles), which are housed in London’s British Museum. The British government believes that it acquired them fairly through its purchase from Lord Elgin, while the Greeks claim the purchase was illegal.

1. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

29th February 2012

Completion of the Tokyo Skytree
The Tokyo Skytree is a broadcasting, restaurant, and observation tower in Sumida, Tokyo, Japan. It became the tallest structure in Japan in 2010 and reached its full height of 634.0 metres (2,080 ft) in March 2011, making it the tallest tower in the world, displacing the Canton Tower, and the second tallest structure in the world after the Burj Khalifa (829.8 m/2,722 ft).[5]

The tower is the primary television and radio broadcast site for the Kantō region; the older Tokyo Tower no longer gives complete digital terrestrial television broadcasting coverage because it is surrounded by high-rise buildings. Skytree was completed on 29 February 2012, with the tower opening to the public on 22 May 2012. The tower is the centrepiece of a large commercial development funded by Tobu Railway and a group of six terrestrial broadcasters headed by NHK. Trains stop at the adjacent Tokyo Skytree Station and nearby Oshiage Station. The complex is 7 km (4.3 mi) north-east of Tokyo Station.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
I responded to yesterday's somewhat worrying brain-malfunction by having a complete rest aside from essential housekeeper stuff. A long two-hour meditation and quietly amusing myself online before the regulation newspapers with Missus then six hours sleep has seemed to do the trick - brain kicked in to the Monday morning routine effortlessly.

It was a reminder that the primal needs, neglected on Saturday, are essential to smooth functioning, and now I'm older they have to be consciously chosen because they no longer shout out loud! I begin this week on an even keel and determined not to neglect essential maintenance to one's wellbeing.

For approximately the first six weeks after conception, all human embryos develop as a default female child, primarily taking genetic information from the mother’s DNA. After the sixth week of development, if the embryo is male, the SRY gene on the Y chromosome will begin to produce androgens, primarily testosterone, that encourage the development of male characteristics and inhibit the further development of female characteristics.

1. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

28th February 1975

The Moorgate Tube Crash
The Moorgate tube crash occurred on Friday 28 February 1975 at 08:46 GMT on the Northern City Line, then operated by London Underground as the Highbury branch of the Northern line. A train failed to stop at the Moorgate station, the line's southern terminus, and crashed into the wall at the end of the tunnel.

43 people died as a result of the crash, the greatest loss of life during peacetime in the London Underground, and a further 74 were injured. With no fault being found with the train equipment, a report from the Department of the Environment found that the driver had not become incapacitated and had failed to slow the train and stop at the station. There was insufficient evidence to determine why he did this.

Following the crash, a safety system that stops a train automatically if the driver fails to brake was introduced on the London Underground which became informally known as Moorgate protection.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
After resting my strained knee ligament for two months, it finally got an unexpected workout at the Weekend Job as I stood in for the trolleyman who's just had - knee surgery! My knee bore up well, but it is still not healed. However I can't wait any longer - I'm feeling the effect of lack of exercise, spent too much money on public transport and I've put on weight, so I am going to gently work it whilst wearing a support.

I've awoken with brain malfunction, total breakdown of concentration. As a "one-off" this doesn't concern me too much. I am quite pleased that I have reacted well to it, not getting upset or overly frustrated. On the plus side, yesterday I had a truly brilliant idea for enhancing mindfulness - it worked well on myself and I will be using it with clients this week.

I spent Saturday with zero libido. I'm now getting these days quite a few days per week, but after four decades with that continual feeling down below, it's something of a novelty, like a fan that's been running continuously for years suddenly stopping. I continue to advocate an orgasm a day for both men and women, but I'm now finding it too much like hard work, particularly on days where I have both zero libido and I'm busy.

However, whilst becoming sexually dysfunctional, I'm not yet asexual or completely impotent. It's clear though that whereas sexuality was in the past self-propelling, it now needs a push! Push it I will, for wellbeing reasons. Frequent orgasms prolong wellbeing by informing the body that it needs to keep going. Specifically in men, it reduces the risk of prostate cancer, for reasons not yet fully understood. It also brings balance to the mind, and of course being in a marriage, a sexual relationship, sex is an important part of that.  Missus' libido is the regulation 2-3 times per week, but settles for once when our somewhat intolerant Son is resident. She would certainly be frustrated and unhappy with less.

In India, a Hindu wife was expected to throw herself on her husband’s burning body on the funeral pyre, effectively committing suicide, so she could enter the next life with him. The practice (called suttee) was abolished in 1829 by British India, though isolated cases of it have occurred into the twenty-first century. The term derived from the goddess Sati, and the term sati is now sometimes used to describe a chaste woman.

1. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

26th February 1991

Tim Berners-Lee introduces the World Wide Web
Berners-Lee wrote what would become known as WorldWideWeb on a NeXT Computer during the second half of 1990, while working for CERN. The first successful build was completed by December 25, 1990, after only two months of development. Successive builds circulated among Berners-Lee's colleagues at CERN before being released to the public, by way of Internet newsgroups, in August 1991. By this time, several others, including Bernd Pollermann, Robert Cailliau, Jean-François Groff, and graduate student Nicola Pellow – who wrote the Line Mode Browser – were involved in the project.

Berners-Lee proposed different names for his new application: The Mine of Information and The Information Mesh were proposals. At the end WorldWideWeb was chosen, but later renamed to Nexus to avoid confusion between the World Wide Web and the web browser.

The team created so called "passive browsers" which do not have the ability to edit because it was hard to port this feature from the NeXT system to other operating systems. Porting to the X Window System (X) was not possible as nobody on the team had experience with X.

Berners-Lee and Groff later adapted many of WorldWideWeb's components into a C programming language version, creating the libwww API.

A number of early browsers appeared, notably ViolaWWW. They were all eclipsed by Mosaic in terms of popularity, which by 1993 had replaced the WorldWideWeb program. Those involved in its creation had moved on to other tasks, such as defining standards and guidelines for the further development of the World Wide Web (e.g. HTML, various communication protocols).

On April 30, 1993, the CERN directorate released the source code of WorldWideWeb into the public domain. Several versions of the software are still available to download from evolt.org's browser archive. Berners-Lee initially considered releasing it under the GNU General Public License, but eventually opted for public domain to maximize corporate support.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
I certainly got the meditation in yesterday - a new binaural beat tone and a combo of frankincense and ylang-ylang proved a good way of losing two hours of consciousness so essential maintenance could take place. The benefits were somewhat offset later however by a double-dose of Viagra, the side-effect of which is to reduce your overnight sleep. With no pressing projects this morning I hope to get in more deep-trance meditation to compensate.

I have realized that there is a clear link between meditation and the ability to practice mindfulness - they are mutually promoting. Now I know that I am not my thoughts, my consciousness can completely separate myself from them, giving them no power over me and making it easy to calm the mind for meditation.

I'm now pressing on and I'm quite excited by the prospect of 24-hour mindfulness. 100% happiness regardless of circumstances! Paradoxically though, it's only benign circumstances that have allowed me to grow to a point where I will soon not depend on them. For all this I am profoundly grateful.

1. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

25th February 1956

Kruschev's "Cult of Personality" Speech
"On the Cult of Personality and Its Consequences" was a report by Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev made to the 20th Party Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union on 25 February 1956. Khrushchev's speech was sharply critical of the reign of deceased General Secretary and Premier Joseph Stalin, particularly with respect to the purges of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union which had especially marked the last years of the 1930s. Khrushchev charged Stalin with having fostered a leadership personality cult despite ostensibly maintaining support for the ideals of communism.

The speech was a milestone in the "Khrushchev Thaw." Superficially, the speech was an attempt to draw the Soviet Communist Party closer to Leninism. Khrushchev's ulterior motivation, however, was to legitimize and help consolidate his control of the Communist party and government, power obtained in a political struggle with Stalin loyalists Vyacheslav Molotov and Georgy Malenkov.

The Khrushchev report was known as the "Secret Speech" because it was delivered at an unpublicized closed session of Communist Party delegates, with guests and members of the press excluded. The text of the Khrushchev report was widely discussed in party cells already in early March, often with participation of non-party members, however the official Russian text was openly published only in 1989 during the glasnost campaign of Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev.

In April 2007, the British newspaper The Guardian included the speech in its series on "Great Speeches of the 20th Century"

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
Thursdays have of late been my quietest day, an opportunity to catch up on prolonged meditation and do some promotional work. Today I want to be reviewing my approach as it was a record for the fewest number of initial consultations turning into clients. This could of course be plain bad luck - I well remember getting grief off people three weeks in a row at the Weekend Job, and back then I again pondered my approach. Without doing much different I'm now on a long grief-free run at the Weekend Job.

In addition, those who do take on a course are invariably happy, suggesting that it's a commitment issue with non-clients, of which I just happen to have got a lot in the last month. One thing is certain - I won't be giving up! Succeed or fail, it will be at doing something I love doing. I subscribe to the philosophy that if you aim for the stars you'll get at least the moon.

Saturn gives off more than twice as much heat as it receives from the Sun. The temperature at Saturn’s core is estimated to be about 21,150° F (11,700° C), which is almost as hot as the surface of the Sun. Like Jupiter, Saturn has all the ingredients necessary to be a star, but isn't big enough to generate the temperature and pressure required to begin nuclear fusion.
