1. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

12th February 1993

The Murder of James Bulger
James Patrick Bulger was a boy from Kirkby, Merseyside, England, who was murdered on 12 February 1993, at the age of two. He was abducted, tortured and beaten to death by two ten-year-old boys, Robert Thompson (born 23 August 1982) and Jon Venables (born 13 August 1982). Bulger disappeared from the New Strand Shopping Centre in Bootle, while accompanying his mother. His mutilated body was found on a railway line two-and-a-half miles (4 km) away in Walton, Liverpool, two days after his murder. Thompson and Venables were charged on 20 February 1993 with Bulger's abduction and murder.

The pair were found guilty on 24 November 1993, making them the youngest convicted murderers in modern English history. They were sentenced to custody until they reached adulthood, initially until the age of 18, and were released under new identities and on a lifelong licence in June 2001. In 2010, Venables was sent to prison for violating the terms of his licence of release, and was released on parole again in 2013.

The case has prompted widespread debate on the issue of how to handle young offenders when they are sentenced or released from custody.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
At one time I wished to be completely free of emotion, seeing them as ruining my life. I have since learned that they are in fact crucial. They enable us to relate to each other, communicate effectively, form cohesive bonds and co-operate to mutual benefit. On an individual level they enable us to be decisive. Without a prevailing emotional desire, choices would simply overwhelm and confuse us.

My learning has also given me an understanding of willful ignorance - how the sensation of one's concept of reality right now is much stronger then abstract ideas of reality, no matter how much truer and more useful they are. People must find their reality uncomfortable or unbearable before they are ready to embrace new ideas.

With understanding comes both power and peace of mind. I see how everything must inevitably be how it is, but at the same time how learning knowing and observing is improving my life experience on a daily basis.

Peace of mind incidentally is life's ultimate prize and greatest experience, pure undiluted ecstasy! Having tasted it and become familiar with it, I intend it to be my default baseline daily experience, and I now have a good grasp of how to get it - by a well-trained sharp focus, positive thought, clear goals and gratitude.

My seeking is over - I have arrived! I can now fully enjoy simply being.

9. ZEN WISDOM
The exclusive pursuit of one’s own interests cannot bring true happiness. It is in striving for the sake of others that the great path to genuine happiness is opened.
