3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
You might be forgiven for thinking that since I am caring for a mentally ill wife, our marriage is a tragic shadow of what it should be. The reality is the exact opposite - the marriage is a source of abundant joy! Certainly completely unlike any other marriage I know, it is nevertheless spectacularly successful and robust, having endured a number of traumas that would end other marriages.

At the core, the formula of success is simple: she absolutely worships me, and I like that! Many guys I know would find that kind of adoration suffocating, but I love it! Secondly, we are completely mutually independent. She is, in what is a stagnant time for my Practice, chief breadwinner. Clueless about housework and a compulsive hoarder, as well as suffering paranoid delusions, she is utterly dependent on me to keep house and look after her at home.

There have been I might add, plenty of times when she has carried me before becoming ill, most notably in 1998 when I had a breakdown and she was at one point caring for the children single-handed when I had severe anger management issues and was completely emotionally unprepared to be a father.

Thirdly we are both quick to confess and forgive - in fact Missus is prone to say sorry when she hasn't done anything wrong. In fact she needs that regular reassurance that she hasn't done anything wrong.

Not only has the marriage survived all the traumas we have gone through, it has enabled us to ultimately flourish! We are much better and happier people than we were when we started. If I had known what would happen beforehand, I would have run from the altar screaming, but what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, and I am certainly that.
