Tipping point...
It has taken two years for industry in the United States to convert from civilian to full-scale war armaments production. Now fully geared to a war footing, its armaments production combined with that of the Soviet Union, in addition to the availability of men to serve in the armed forces, is several times greater than that of Germany and Japan combined.

Any hope of an Axis victory rested in the destruction and collapse of the Soviet Union, Britain suing for peace or being conquered, and the United States also agreeing to peace before converting to full armaments production. None of these objectives was achieved. In Britain, Churchill was never going to ask for peace, and the Luftwaffe due to poor leadership was unable to subdue the RAF, a prerequisite for invasion.

In the Soviet Union, Hitler failed to take into account the Geographical and climactic conditions, and the brutal treatment of the local population that first hailed the Germans as liberators fatally undermined German capacity to hold the conquered territories, as well as causing the Russian people to unite behind Stalin. Furthermore, Stalin listened to the advice of his talented senior generals whereas Hitler did not and was proved to be a very incompetent commander, leading to disaster at Stalingrad in 1942 and Kursk in 1943.

In the Pacific, the apparent victory at Pearl Harbor was in reality a failure - the submarine pens, fuel dumps and absent carrier fleet remained intact, ultimately leading to the decisive defeat at The Battle of Midway in 1942 and the end of the Japanese ambition of being unassailable in the Pacific.

From this point, hopelessly outnumbered in men and armaments, and with an incompetent inflexible leadership, the defeat of Germany and Japan is inevitable.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
A significant "senior moment" occurred yesterday afternoon - I got rather distressed when I thought I had lost my keys by leaving them on the outside of the back door and them being subsequently stolen. Sheer panic and self-anger briefly set in. It turned out I had come in, closed but not locked the back door, put the keys on the kitchen worktop, unthinkingly covered them with a paper towel and was then distracted by other tasks.

At the end of the day no harm was done, but I am concerned that I lost concentration so easily, leading to some unnecessary distress. It has been brought home to me that focus on the moment is essential not only for mental and spiritual wellbeing but also for practical for day-to-day living.
