1. THIS DAY IN WORLD WAR 2 (28th January 1944)
On the Russian Front...
Soviet 54th Army captures Lyuban
Against Hitler's orders, Field Marshal Georg Von Kuchler orders the German 18th Army to withdraw to the Luga River
Soviet 1st Ukrainian Front and 2nd Ukrainian Front encircle German XI Korps and XLII Korps in the Korsun pocket

In the Arctic...
German vessel Henriette Schulte is sunk by Soviet submarine S-56

In London...
Anthony Eden reports on Japanese atrocities against POWs
General Omar Bradley takes command of the US 1st Army

In Italy...
II Corps of US 5th Army continue attacking across the Rapido River
British 10th Corps of US 5th Army attack from the Garigliano River bridgehead
German 10th Army attack the French Expeditionary Corps of US 5th Army around Belvedere Hill
US VI Corps, with heavy air support, continues making limited attacks from the Anzio beachhead
Hitler orders General Albert Kesselring to crush the Anzio beachhead

In the Mediterranean...
Kriegsmarine vessel R-201 is sunk by RAF aircraft

In the Atlantic...
U-271 is sunk by USN aircraft
U-571 is sunk by RAF aircraft

In the Pacific...
Japanese fighter losses in the Marshall Islands have been so severe that they are no longer able to intercept bombing raids after this date
Japanese vessel Neikai Maru (with IJN midget submarine Ha-49 aboard) is sunk by US aircraft off New Ireland

In New Guinea...
Australian 8th Infantry Brigade reaches Kian on the coast
In the Dumpu-Bogadjim sector, Australian 18th Infantry Brigade attack Crater Hill against heavy resistance

In Burma...
Chinese 22nd Infantry Division advance toward the Hukawng Valley
In the Arakan, Indian 161st Infantry Brigade attack Razabil west of the Mayu Range

Today's Air Raids...
Berlin by RAF Bomber Command
Netherlands on German airfields RAF Bomber Command
V-Weapons Sites, Northern France by US 8th Air Force and RAF 2nd Tactical Air Force
Orvieto, Colleferro, and military targets in Italy by US 12th Air Force
Aviano, Verona, and Ferrara, Italy by US 5th Air Force
Maloelap Atoll, Wotje Atoll, Kwajalein Atoll, and Mille Atoll by US 7th Air Force
Shortland Islands military targets by US 13th Air Force
Cape Gloucester and military targets on New Britain by US 5th Air Force
Rabaul, New Britain by US 13th Air Force and US AirSols, inflicting particularly heavy losses of Japanese aircraft

The situation of both the Luftwaffe and the Imperial Japanese Air Force from this point becomes impossible. Allied aircraft and pilots are now being produced in numbers that far exceed Axis production. Consequently they are being overwhelmed in air battles with losses that cannot be matched by replacements. The Allies now have air superiority and will soon in many theatres of war be completely unchallenged.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
Daughter, our relationship now very dead, continues to haunt my life! This time it's due to the final breakdown of her relationship with Son, and Daughter attempting to use Missus as a tool and consequently upsetting her. Stopping short of intervening, I have had to reassure Missus that she has done nothing wrong.

My policy is that if Daughter begins to make Missus ill, at that point I will reluctantly step in and separate them. What I had considered as just a particularly awful puberty is now I believe more than that - it is a paranoia-based mental illness carried down both paternal and maternal lines that affects the females.

Unfortunately there's nothing I can do about it. I can only safeguard the wellbeing of the remaining family. I have to accept how it is and respond accordingly. Though still sad about it, I feel I'm "all cried out" and eager to get on with my life.

9. ZEN WISDOM
Ultimately, our battle is with ourselves. Whether in our activities in society, or whether in historical, political or economic developments, everything essentially boils down to a struggle between positive and negative forces.
