3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION

My least favourite thing about being a carer for a mentally-ill wife is the necessity to be a parent on occasion - telling her NO, going into her things and tidying them, overriding her wishes and using subterfuge. I take absolutely no pleasure in any of this, but it's absolutely necessary
for her wellbeing.

As far as I possibly can I treat her as a loving wife and partner, and for extended periods of time I can forget I'm a carer. I give her as much choice and freedom as I safely can. When I do have to be parental I'm often filled with a deep lonely sadness. Only I can do it - I am best qualified by vast experience, by caring the most and by being on-the-spot.

This is all hard enough, but I also have to defend her against external threats that make it even more difficult. In the past this has been healthcare professionals who are so obsessed with the patient and patient's rights that they exclude and make more difficult the life of the one who actually genuinely cares every day.

This threat has receded as Missus' condition has stabilized, but an ongoing threat is Daughter. This is highly distressing - Daughters are generally caring for mothers - not this one! This one expects to be cared FOR. Daughter without hesitation or conscience will vent all her frustrations on her mother, will gladly exploit her mother's generosity to extract money we don't have to give, will sulk and wage psychological warfare on her mother and make absolutely no allowances for the fact that her mother has a severe mental illness. And all this on one who only wants to love her Daughter unconditionally.

At best, on a good day when she is in a good mood, she will be civil to her mum - which is as close as she gets to caring. As far as I am concerned, she is a parasite who cannot be removed without killing the host, so my intervention is limited to when this ghastly individual makes her mum cry or attempts to extort money.

Words cannot express the profound disappointment in having a daughter who has turned out to be so awful, my only consolation being a Son who is the complete opposite - a generous warm-hearted delight.

I think therefore that this character has the right on occasion to feel lonely, to shed a few unseen tears and to unleash the full power of my Dark Side on would-be predators. but there are compensations aside from Son - Missus worships me - which is kinda nice. Also I get a lot more freedom to do my thing than other husbands enjoy, and a host of domestic creature-comforts.

Distressing things and challenges notwithstanding, there is still much for which to express gratitude.
