THE GREAT MAZE PRISON ESCAPE
In one of the largest prison escapes in British history, 38 Provisional Irish Republican Army prisoners in block H7 overpowered their guards, hijacked a prison meals lorry and smashed their way out of HM Prison Maze in County Antrim, Northern Ireland.

Fifteen escapees were recaptured on the first day.  Four more escapees were captured over the next two days, including Hugh Corey and Patrick McIntyre who were captured following a two-hour siege at an isolated farmhouse. Out of the remaining 19 escapees, 18 ended up in the republican stronghold of South Armagh then were transported to safehouses, and given the option of either returning to active service in the IRA's armed campaign or a job and new identity in the United States.

The Hennessy Report was published on 26 January 1984 placing most of the blame for the escape on prison staff, and made a series of recommendations to improve security at the prison. The report also placed blame with the designers of the prison, the Northern Ireland Office and successive prison governors who had failed to improve security. The prison's governor resigned, but there were no ministerial resignations as a result of the report's findings.

I'm entering a distraction-free quiet period, which is golden "make hay while the sun shines" opportunity for consolidation and self-development. This mind has never been so wonderfully internally quiet! I intend to expand this to the point where the mind is mainly internally silent. I am aware that the circumstances may not always be as benign as they are now so its important to grow mentally robust in advance.

In 1988, a swine flu virus killed pregnant 32-year-old Barbara Ann Wieners after she visited a hog barn at a county fair in Wisconsin. Doctors were able to induce labour and deliver a healthy daughter before she died. Though those working with the pigs and those she came into contact with tested positive for swine flu, due to good healthcare there was no community outbreak.
