1. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

16th September 1400
THE WELSH REVOLT BEGINS
Owain Glyndŵr is proclaimed Prince of Wales and independence from England declared. At first, the revolt went well. The new English king, Henry IV was a usurper and still establishing himself against rebellious English barons, particularly the Percy family in Northumberland. By 1405 all of Wales owed alliegance to Glyndŵr, who made Harlech his capital.

In 1406 the tide turned - the French withdrew their support, and the English re-took Anglesey. The War against the Welsh was taken over by the king's son (also called Henry), a brilliant military strategist, he stopped the failed army expeditions, imposed a blockade on Wales and began re-taking castles one-at-a-time. In 1409 the capital Harlech fell and Glyndŵr's wife and daughters were captured and imprisoned for life in the Tower of London.

Glyndŵr remained free and continued a guerrilla war against the English. In 1412 he led his last major successful raid on Brecon, where he captured then ransomed Dafydd Gam, a supporter of the English king. In 1413 Henry IV died. His son as Henry V offered royal pardons to the rebels, and many accepted, effectively ending the revolt. Glyndŵr himself refused these offers and was never captured. He probably died in 1415 and was buried by his followers in a secret location.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
I will remember my early fifties as the time of the "urine-boner" - rock-hard erections in the small hours caused not by rampant testosterone but a full badder. It has taken some getting used to - you think your body's telling you it wants a really good cum when what it actually wants is a really good pee. I've now got used to the system of, when waking up horny, looking at the clock. If it's between 1am and 5am, I know I need the toilet. After 5am, use the toilet anyway and get up! As enthusiastic as I am about the joys of a good cum, I simply don't need one overnight.

In another change, I've needed more sleep recently, unprompted by any shift of circumstance. By 1pm yesterday I was seriously nodding. Next time I opened my eyes it was 3pm. I then was in bed for 9am and went through 'til 4.30, woken by - yes - a urine boner. Then the cats wanted breakfast so I stayed up. I will probably be in bed for 10pm tonight. I know how important sleep is to wellbeing so I'm not going to fight this upsurge in demand if my bodymind needs it.
