1. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

17th September 1980
BIRTH OF SOLIDARITY
Solidarity, the first independent trade union in a Soviet-bloc country, is founded in Poland following a series of strikes in the Gdansk shipyard. It soon transformed from a trade-union to a revolutionary movement, swelling in membership to 9 million in two years. It was suppressed in 1981 when the Communist government under pressure from Moscow imposed martial law. The movement was driven underground but continued to thrive despite mass-arrests and show-trials. In 1988 during an economic crisis, it went public again, and with a change of leader in Moscow and the Soviets less prepared to intervene, negotiations with the government led to re-legalization and in 1989, victory in a free election, ending Communist rule in Poland.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
The need for more sleep and the number of urine-boners I'm getting has shown a marked increase of late. For the second night in a row I was in bed for 9pm and had three urine-boners, deciding to get up on the third one at 04:45 as I would normally be up at 05:00 anyway. However, I am not overly concerned as there are no other obvious symptoms at this point.

On a more encouraging note, my severe ankle blisters are 90% healed, and once well-padded, stood up to a 3.5 mile hike with no oozing or secretion, saving money on the bus and getting me moving after some recent weight-gain. With the Summer lull and pleasurable distractions now over, I am expecting weight to drop back again.

Thursdays tend to be the easiest-going day of the week, with fewer deadlines to meet, but I intend to be productive - afternoon will include a long meditation which I consider essential mind-maintenance, helping me to keep "in-the-zone". To push on with self-development, my mind needs to be in the right place all the time.
