1. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY
28th September 1781
THE BATTLE OF YORKTOWN BEGINS
The last land battle of the American War of Independence began as a result of British general Cornwallis choosing Yorktown as his base. He was unaware that a large French naval force was heading towards him to aid the Americans. General George Washington, in charge of American forces, seized the opportunity and ordered the French fleet to blockade Chesapeake Bay, preventing the British garrison from being resupplied or being able to escape by sea.
Meanwhile, Washington's forces surrounded the town and begun bombarding it. Finally on October 17 Cornwallis surrendered his 7,000-strong garrison. This was the last major land battle fought by the Americans in the war. The war was draining much-needed British resources and they were also losing the war against France and Spain. It convinced many British politicians that the war was unwinnable and caused a change of government and the British to sue for peace with the Americans. Negotiations began in 1782 and American independence was recognized in the Treaty of Paris in 1783.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
It's like being the general of an army whose camp has been raided. Half the army is screaming for vengeance, wanting to pursue the raiders into the bush, but I know full well that the consequences would be disastrous - we'd be overstretched and annihilated. The correct policy is to double the guard at the perimeter and launch salvos whenever the enemy is spotted close by.
I am aware that what I call "me" is actually a community of energies with different agendas. Understanding this, "we" have agreed that intuition is the supreme authority in decision-making and as rage begins to settle, I have "unity rituals" that get the various systems to work together in common cause.
I remain vulnerable to unexpected attacks, frustrations and disappointments, but at least now I have the strategies in place given time and space to restore internal order much faster and in most cases without causing harm. This character can be proud of its progress and can pass on its learning and experience to help others.

8. TRIVIA
Unlike other planets, Venus has no craters on its surface smaller than 1.25 miles across. Because the atmosphere is so dense, smaller asteroids are crushed to powder before they reach the surface of the planet, leaving no smaller craters.
9. ZEN WISDOM
