1. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

20th September 1519
MAGELLAN SETS OUT
Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan sets sail from Spain in an effort to find a western sea route to the rich Spice Islands of Indonesia. In command of five ships and 270 men, Magellan sailed to West Africa and then to Brazil, where he searched the South American coast for a strait that would take him to the Pacific. The strait he eventually found is named after him, the Strait of Magellan.

Magellan himself was killed the following April on the island of Cebu in the Philippines fighting for a pro-Christian tribe against a neighbouring tribe. Of the five ships and 270 men that set out, only the Vittoria and a crew of 18 under the command of Basque navigator Juan Sebastián Elcano arrived at the Spanish port of Sanlucar de Barrameda on September 6, 1522, becoming the first ship to circumnavigate the globe.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
The Weekend Job is going through a period where it's almost too smooth to be true, with no grief from managers or customers, and lord knows I've had my share of both in the past! For this smooth run I am very grateful. It has enabled me to focus on being "in the zone", the mental effort involved itself helping to pass the time.

My mind when undisciplined has the capacity to wander into all manner of dark unhelpful places, and even disciplined it's hard work preventing it! I am however determined to do so and spend every conscious moment "in the zone". I'm still fine-tuning how to do that, and I will be using focus on breathing as a physical anchor with which to keep my mind in the right place.

I picked up a useful maxim that also helps to keep me grounded: do not let yesterday's sadness or tomorrow's worries distract you from today's happiness - I am keeping that at the forefront of my mind.

4. TODAY'S QUESTION FOR YOU

7. NOW THAT'S FUNNY!

8. TRIVIA
Galen, a prominent surgeon to Roman gladiators, agreed with Aristotle that the heart was the body’s source of heat, a type of “lamp” fueled by blood from the liver and fanned into spirituous flame by air from the lungs. The brain merely served to cool the blood. The blood was then "consumed" by the rest of the body. This view was unchallenged for 1400 years until it was conclusively disproved in 1628 by English physician William Harvey, who showed that blood was in fact recirculated by the heart.

9. ZEN WISDOM
Real love is not two people clinging to each other; it can only be fostered between two strong people secure in their individuality.
