1. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

1st July 1916: The Battle of the Somme
The first day on the Somme, 1 July 1916, was the opening day of the Battle of Albert (1–13 July), the name given by the British to the first two weeks of the Battle of the Somme. Nine corps of the French Sixth Army, the British Fourth and the Third armies, attacked the German 2nd Army of General Fritz von Below, from Foucaucourt south of the Somme northwards to Serre, north of the Ancre and at Gommecourt, which was 2 miles (3.2 km) beyond, in the Third Army area. The objective of the attack was to capture the German first and second positions from Serre south to the Albert–Bapaume road and the first position from the road south to Foucaucourt.

The German defence south of the road mostly collapsed and the French had "complete success" on both banks of the Somme, as did the British from Maricourt on the army boundary, where XIII Corps took Montauban and reached all its objectives and XV Corps captured Mametz and isolated Fricourt. The III Corps attack on both sides of the Albert–Bapaume road was a disaster, making only a short advance south of La Boisselle, where the 34th Division had largest number of casualties of any Allied division on 1 July. Further north, the X Corps attack captured the Leipzig Redoubt, failed opposite Thiepval and had a great but temporary success on the left flank, where the German front line was overrun by the 36th Division, which then captured Schwaben and Stuff redoubts.

German counter-attacks during the afternoon recaptured most of the lost ground north of the Albert–Bapaume road and fresh attacks against Thiepval were costly defeats. On the north bank of the Ancre, the attack of VIII Corps was another failure, with large numbers of British troops being shot down in no man's land. The VII Corps diversion at Gommecourt was also costly, with only a partial and temporary advance south of the village. The German defeats from Foucaucourt to the Albert–Bapaume road, left the German defence on the south bank incapable of resisting another attack and a substantial German retreat began, from the Flaucourt plateau to the west bank of the Somme close to PĂ©ronne, while north of the Somme, Fricourt was abandoned overnight.

Several truces were observed to recover wounded from no man's land on the British front, where the Fourth Army had lost 57,470 casualties, of whom 19,240 men were killed. Nine Victoria Crosses were subsequently awarded. The French had 1,590 casualties and the German 2nd Army lost 10,000–12,000 men. Orders were issued to the Anglo-French armies to continue the offensive on 2 July and a German counter-attack on the north bank of the Somme by the 12th Division, intended for the night of 1/2 July, took until dawn on 2 July to begin and was destroyed.

The offensive continued until 18th November, after which due to weather conditions and lack of resources it was ended. In that time, the Allies had advanced six miles across a 16-mile front, at the cost of 481,842 British soldiers and about 250,000 French. The Germans lost 236,194 soldiers. One of the main objectives, to distract the Germans from their offensive at Verdun, failed. That battle continued, though the Germans also failed at Verdun.

The cost of the battle, bourne mainly by the British, and the negligible gains have been a source of grief and controversy in Britain ever since.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
A very Yin-Yang time! Sleepwise, all caught-up and I'm enjoying working with my clients. Son is off to Belarus, which wasn't my preference but his journey is going smoothly so far. Missus has developed a new psychotic behaviour, which I now have to manage. I used to get really upset at her relapses and setbacks but I've now come to accept that she is mentally ill with no cure and not to suffer alone, but spread the information.

My most crucial life-lesson is that none of these events is "me" or is any reflection on me. They are just waves that the universe emanates. This understanding has given me a wonderful peace of mind. So long as I keep up with my disciplines, I can maintain this level of superconsciousness and enjoy the movie.

4. TODAY'S QUESTION  FOR YOU
All that stuff going on in your head - which of it is "you"?

8. TRIVIA
A normal, healthy amount of food for an average teenager or adult is about 1,800- 2,600 calories a day. During a bingeing episode, it is not unusual for someone to eat 20 to 25 times that amount, which is more than 50,000 calories - roughly equivalent to an entire extra-large pepperoni pizza, a tub of ice cream, a package of cookies, a bag of potato chips, and an entire cake. Bulimics might engage in this type of eating several times a day.

1. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

15th May 1916: The Lynching of Jesse Washington
Jesse Washington, a teenage African-American farmhand, was lynched in Waco, Texas, on May 15, 1916, in what became a well-known example of racially motivated lynching. Washington was accused of raping and murdering Lucy Fryer, the wife of his white employer in rural Robinson, Texas. There were no eyewitnesses to the crime, but during his interrogation by the McLennan County sheriff he signed a confession and described the location of the murder weapon.

Washington was tried for murder in Waco, in a courtroom filled with furious locals. He entered a guilty plea and was quickly sentenced to death. After his sentence was pronounced, he was dragged out of the court by observers and lynched in front of Waco's city hall. Over 10,000 spectators, including city officials and police, gathered to watch the attack. There was a celebratory atmosphere at the event, and many children attended during their lunch hour. Members of the mob castrated Washington, cut off his fingers, and hung him over a bonfire. He was repeatedly lowered and raised over the fire for about two hours. After the fire was extinguished, his charred torso was dragged through the town and parts of his body were sold as souvenirs. A professional photographer took pictures as the event unfolded, providing rare imagery of a lynching in progress. The pictures were printed and sold as postcards in Waco.

Although the lynching was supported by many Waco residents, it was condemned by newspapers around the United States.  Although Waco had been regarded as a modern, progressive city, the lynching demonstrated that it still tolerated racial violence; the event was nicknamed the "Waco horror". The city subsequently gained a reputation for racism, but city leaders prevented violence on several occasions in subsequent decades. Washington's death helped alter the way that lynching was viewed; the publicity it received rconsiderably educed public support for the practice, which became viewed as barbarism rather than as an acceptable form of justice. In the 1990s and 2000s, some Waco residents lobbied for a monument to the lynching, an idea that has failed to garner wide support in the city.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
My body is being invaded! I am sufficiently in tune with my body to recognize a viral attack at its earliest stages, indicated by producing more phlegm, a sore throat and a negative feeling. Fortunately I have a Rottweiler immune system and a generally ferocious attitude to encroachments in general, be it from viruses, animals or people. I'm certainly not invincible but I have a good history of fighting off infection.

It doesn't help though that I have damaged knee ligament since January with little sign of healing. I can still walk on said knee but it appears to have gone backwards in the last couple of days. The time has come to consult the local surgery's resident Physio. There's going to be no quick answers however if any at all.

My other deterioration was a masturbation failure. I am used to these if I foolishly indulge an overnight urine boner, but this was the first time I couldn't keep an erection going for my daily orgasm during the day. Unlike proper sex, where unassisted erections have been a problem for some time, solo indulgences have been ok because there's fewer limitations to what you can do and there's no "hanging around". This time however, my erection died on me. Feeling somewhat frustrated I dropped a magic blue tablet and a few hours later had no problem.

Whilst the confidentiality of my clients is sacred, you may have noticed that my own life is a completely open book. I think that if I didn't share my experiences, my cred as a teacher/philosopher would be undermined. Having openly described what I've been through and am going through to those who are interested, the wisdom I offer is clearly grounded in gritty reality.

So, living up to my own philosophy that it's all about how you respond, I am responding intuitively. I will consult more knowledgeable heads regarding the knee. Meantime I am making myself more comfortable by treating virus and knee symptoms with a hefty dose of analgesics. That lightens mood and frees up my mind to function better. Orgasms will have to be restricted to the mid-mornings (sexual peak) where I have the privacy, the bed and the time, ensuring I'm relaxed and well-hydrated. I can no longer successfully fap any time and place! It therefore looks like the apparatus is getting a day off today, which isn't a disaster.

4. TODAY'S QUESTION FOR YOU
Are you responding in the right way to what you're facing?

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
Though I'm looking to ditch the Weekend Job at the first opportunity, one thing I do enjoy is the walk there - most therapeutic, not to mention cheaper, less stressful and more reliable than the bus!

The return to the Weekend Job was smooth, and with changes of team-leaders being postponed, there was no chaos. Free of distractions, I was able to focus on keeping my mind in the right place. I have been fine-tuning where exactly to centre my awareness. After some experimentation, I have found the best place is as observer and let intuition run the show.

With thought continually interfering, frequent re-grounding is needed, which I do by imagining retreating from my body and allowing the energy within it to flow freely. This seems to be working quite well so far. The ultimate aim is to allow intuition to run the show entirely, reserving intellect for observation and concluding truths from those observations. This calls for FAITH a trust in one's own subconscious that it knows what it's doing.

My observations of faith are that it empowers that believed in, so by the very act of believing in my deeper self enables it to do the job! I look forward to another day making progress in the transition from thought-driven to intuitive living.

The reason that brain cells don't reproduce is because if they did it would not be possible to retain memory

9. ZEN WISDOM
Everything depends on what is in our hearts. If we decide to ourselves that something is impossible, then, consistent with our minds in thinking so, even something that is possible for us will become impossible. On the other hand, if we have the confidence that we can definitely do something, then we are already one step closer to achieving it in reality.

A return to normal patterns overnight! With the magic blue tablets having worn off, I was untroubled by overnight urges and paid off some sleep debt, going a full 7 hours (interrupted only by a wee at 3) and waking at 6am, the middle of the day by my standards. I also recall a dream, a sure sign that I slept well.

In fact I have woken with a wonderfully settled mind! If that continues, a good day beckons as I focus entirely on my actions and intentIons rather than circumstances.
