1. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

17th July 1936: The Attempted Coup of 1936
Following a period of troubles in the Second Spanish Republic, a group of military officers attempted to overthrow the left-wing Popular Front government, elected five months previously, by a coup d'etat. Planning started in early 1936, and the coup was launched on 17 and 18 July, using the pretext of the summary execution of a prominent Conservative monarchist, Clavo Soleto, which was itself a reprisal for the murder of Lieutenant Jose Cartillo, a Republican loyalist, by Jorge Bardina, a member of the Fascist Falange.

The rising was intended to be swift, but with the army divided and the outcome in specific local areas was decided by army rebels or anarchist militias. Spanish Morocco fell easily to the rebels - the 30,000-strong Army of Africa had most of the professional elite soldiers who predominantly sympathised with the rebellion, backed by local Muslims who feared the imposition of atheism by the Republicans.

The government retained control of the majority of the country including Málaga, Jaén and Almería. However, Cadiz was taken for the rebels and General Queipo de Llano managed to secure Seville. This victory proved crucial to the rebels - with the help of transport planes from Nazi Germany it enabled the powerful Army of Africa to be flown over to mainland Spain and continue the fight. They were then able to drive north and link up with General Mola's Northern Army.

In the east of the country, the coup was mostly a failure. In Madrid, the rebels were hemmed into the Montaña barracks, which fell with much bloodshed. On 19 July the cabinet headed by the newly appointed prime minister José Giral ordered the distribution of weapons to the unions, helping to defeat the rebels in Barcelona, and Valencia, which led to anarchists taking control of large parts of Aragon and Catalonia. Rebel General Goded surrendered in Barcelona and was later condemned to death.

In the three days of the coup attempt, the result was victory for the rebels in the west and failure in the east. The country was thus divided into Rebel and Republican-held regions, but it left the rebels in a stronger position. Rebels had secured the support of around half of Spain's Peninsular army, which allowing for large numbers on extended leave totaled about 66,000 men, and all of the 30,000-strong Army of Africa. The Republicans retained less than half the supply of rifles, heavy and light machine guns and artillery pieces. Both sides had few tanks and outdated aircraft, and naval capacity was fairly even. Officers' defections weakened Republican units of all types.

The consequence of this outcome was the beginning of the bloody three-year Spanish Civil War. With the rebels getting much better military support from outside the country, particularly from Germany and Italy, the Republicans, though fanatical and determined, were hopelessly outgunned, and worn down by attrition, finally surrendered in 1939. Spain was then subjected to Fascist rule under dictator Francisco Franco for 36 years.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
Today has the feel of a fresh start without any radical changes taking place. Son has returned overnight from Belarus after a trip that went much smoother than I feared it might. I have a busy week for clients and Missus has a week left before the long Summer holiday. I myself get a break from the Weekend Job at the end of this week.

The general vibe is of much to do but with the time and resources available for work rest and play, so it's a case of getting on with it. I have come through a period of overindulgence and I'm now finding balance. I have particularly learned how important to my wellbeing Internal Silence is. My thoughts unleashed lead my mind into all manner of dark places. Being, intending and intuitively deciding are much healthier ways to conduct myself, allowing this avatar to function at its most efficient.

As it happens, I'm teaching the principle of internal silence to two completely different clients this week, so I will be applying controlled thought to how to introduce this discipline to two complete beginners - and relishing the challenge!

9. ZEN WISDOM
Only three thoughts serve a purpose: what you're doing, what you want and what you like. The rest are wasteful distractions if indulged.

1. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

5th December 1259
The Treaty Of Paris

In 1204, Philip II of France had forced King John out of continental Normandy, enforcing his 1202 claim that the lands were forfeit. Despite the 1217 Treaty of Lambeth, hostilities continued between the successive Kings of France and England until 1259.

Under the Treaty, Henry acknowledged loss of the Dukedom of Normandy. However Philip had failed in his attempts to occupy the Norman islands in the Channel. The treaty held that "islands (if any) which the King of England should hold", he would retain "as peer of France and Duke of Aquitaine" .

Henry agreed to renounce control of Maine, Anjou and Poitou, which had been lost under the reign of King John but remained Duke of Aquitaine and was able to keep the lands of Gascony and parts of Aquitaine but only as a vassal to Louis.

In exchange, Louis withdrew his support for English rebels. He also ceded to Henry the bishoprics and cities of Limoges, Cahors and Périgueux and was to pay an annual rent for possession of Agenais.

The peace held until the reign of Edward III, who had no intention of paying homage to the Capetian kings of France to keep his lands there, so initiating the Hundred Years War.

A consequence of the Treaty of Paris was the end of French as the language of the English royal court. No longer in possession of lands across the English Channel, the French-speaking Normans interbred with the majority indigenous English and so brought about the extinction of separate Norman identity.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
I begin the weekend with a very still mind - no bad thing when you're about to embark on the weekend job. It's most pleasant indeed to have your mind completely clear of clutter and to simply be. With great gratitude I will simply experience it. Without doubt the most comfortable place for my consciousness sat on the character's shoulder, with the character running itself and consciousness simply having an experience from the location of the character, unattached to any outcome but totally fascinated.

It's taken many years to get to this point, to be perpetually attached may take a while longer, but while it's here it's absolutely excellent. I'VE ARRIVED!! Peace of mind, independent of circumstances! Of course, that's easy when the circumstances are so benevolent. It's now important to make hay while the sun shines and consolidate this location as the permanent home of consciousness, sat on the shoulder of the character.

7th September 1571
THE "RIDOLFI PLOT" IS FOILED
Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk, was arrested for his involvement in a plan to overthrow Queen Elizabeth I and replace her with Mary, Queen of Scots. The Duke was later executed. Italian banker Roberto Di Ridolfi, who financed the plot, was safely in Paris at the time and was never caught. He ultimately returned to Florence, where he served as a senator.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
I have been somewhat distracted of late by trivial online amusements, but they have now kinda run their course, freeing my mind to refocus on self-development, although today will be largely devoted to clearing a housework backlog! To be fair to myself, I haven't had an uninterrupted Monday since July. Though Son still has another 2.5 weeks, he has a lot of his own stuff to do and I don't expect him to slow me down.

I am delighted and a little excited at the progress I'm making in mind-emptying - in calm and distraction-free conditions, I can do this at will! I now want to take every opportunity to strengthen my mind in the "good times" so it will be ready for any storms that may come and also to keep my neurosis well-managed.

I am now frequently visualizing my ultimate spiritual goal - to be entirely intuitively driven, and for consciousness to disentangle entirely from this character. In some sense,  I am already no longer fully "human" - consciousness is above humanity, looking down on it. But I have no regrets that I can't go back or unlearn what I know - but my character was not having such a great time anyway and is now doing much better and making much more difference being "remotely observed"

4. TODAY'S QUESTION FOR YOU

1. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

6th September 1781
THE BATTLE OF GROTON HEIGHTS
In the War of American Independence, a British force led by Benedict Arnold, an American defector, raided New London, Conneticut, burning it to the ground, and stormed Fort Griswold - due to a misunderstanding regarding surrender, the American defenders were massacred. Though carried out successfully, the raid failed in its prime objective of diverting American forces besieging Yorktown, which fell to the Americans soon after.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
I am making significant progress in mindfulness, as I've finally hit on visualizations that have "stuck". However, for this character it will always be hard work - my attention easily wanders into bad memories and dark scenarios, and my mind has a lifelong inclination to overreact. Of course, it's these very weaknesses that have driven my pursuit of mindfulness to such an advanced level - out of necessity!

There has been a payoff - peace of mind, the greatest prize that this life experience can offer! Most of the time, my sensitivities are not being prodded, giving me ample time to practise all my necessary mental disciplines, which make me more robust and able to enjoy the bliss that's generally my reality. In previous times, before my mindfulness was so strongly developed, I'd wander into dark thought completely unprovoked.

So then, onwards and upwards! With such an oversensitive mind, there is no room for complacency - I need to maximize every opportunity to strengthen my mindfulness skills and keep focus on a very tight leash, enabling my direction to be intuitively led and so make the maximum possible difference.

4. TODAY'S QUESTION FOR YOU
What action do you take to promote your own mental health?

5. TODAY'S WEATHER IN BRADFORD

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
With sleep debt becoming a serious issue, I retired at 20:30 last night as did Missus, and with the exception of a couple of urinations, slept right through until 05:00, and feel much better for it. I intend to be more disciplined over the coming months!

Given three days grounded for recovery, my ankle megablisters have made significant progress but remain sore and still weeping in places. I can wait no longer and need to venture out today! I will have them well-padded and see how they get on!

My mind begins the day blissfully calm, an excellent way to begin the day. I intend to ensure that all primal needs are met to keep it at maximum efficiency and see how I get on with thought-management, relying as much as I can on intuition.

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
I have a flaw in my character that you might call "time greed" - I'm never satisfied with the time I have available and get a little upset when what time I thought I had gets taken from me. Of course, now I've identified it as an issue, I have a responsibility to address it. The "bottom-line" is of course attachment. I agree with the Buddhist philosophy that attachment is the root cause of suffering - identifying wellbeing with something transient.

Attachments can be less than obvious - you can have them without realizing. But look deeper into the root cause of any distress, and you can find it. The treatment of course is to relax, and let the attachment go. Like an illness you've had before, you can react much quicker to an attachment you already recognize and perform a ritual of release before suffering arises.
