THIS DAY IN WORLD WAR 2 (24th December 1942)
On
the Russian Front... The Tatinskaya Raid takes place. The Soviet 24th Tank Corps races deep behind the front and reaches Tatsinskaya airfield, destroying
more than seventy Luftwaffe transports and stopping any supplies being sent to Stalingrad. The German XLVIII Panzer Korps are despatched to engage the Soviet force, which is now itself cut off from resupply.
Luftwaffe aircraft evacuate Morozovskaya airfield as Soviet armored forces
approach.
Soviet 51st Army and 2nd Guards Army launch a counter-offensive against German Group Hoth.
In Stalingrad, the Soviet 62nd Army recaptures the Red October factory.
In Libya... Advance elements of the British 7th Armored Division run into Axis positions near
Sirte.
In Tunisia... British 1st Guards Infantry Brigade captures Longstop Hill north of Medjez el
Bab. The Allied offensive then halts, waiting for an improvement in the weather.
In Algiers... Admiral Darlan is assassinated. General Giraud is named Free French commissioner for North Africa.

2. TODAY IN MY LIFE
Early waking has given me the opportunity to get in some blogging and me time first thing. Some online counselling. Off to the local store for a final few food items for Christmas Day. Ironing! Lunchtime with Son. General family time as required thereafter, me time if I get a chance!

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
A phenomenon that interests me is the self-righteousness of others, people so determined to be the aggrieved and the offended that they are blind to the reality that they are the authors of their own situation. When such people vent their spleens on me, my standard response is to sever contact, but if they invade my space, I will unleash my Dark Side upon them.
The "poor me" mindset blinds folk to their own failings. Of course, that's often why self-pity arises in the first place, to protect you when you can't accept that you have a personal issue or two. In my own life, I have discovered that energy spent on consoling yourself on what a victim you are is better spent ruthlessly expelling negative people from your life and managing your own issues.
The consequence of practising what I preach has been a much nicer environment around myself, abundant self-development and my personal issues well-managed. None of this makes me invincible of course. Stuff out of the blue can in an instant destroy everything you've created. That's all part of the life experience. But even then, I would not dissolve into self-pity. I would simply do something new. It's great to be in the Premier League, but if you get relegated to the Bradford Sunday League, what's important is to play football.
I have learned that life is an experience to be participated in, and the whole point is the challenge. When there is no challenge, when there's no difference left to make, life becomes pointless. It's the playing to win, not the winning that is the purpose of the life experience. Once you understand this, you are liberated from fear and misery and are free to live life.
