3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
Today marks the final day of a truly magnificent slob spent mainly on the Consulting Room couch lost in cyberworld, giving just enough time to missus, who has mainly been with Daughter, to keep her happy.

I was pleased to see how positively Son responded to our long talk, and enjoyed a similar day to mine in his room. Off out rehearsing with his second band today, his morale will no doubt lift higher.

Daughter is sadly in a bad way - and looks it, though it must be said entirely self-inflicted - as a result of poor choices, self-absorbtion and a determination to blame circumstances, other people, ANYTHING other than herself for her unhappiness in relationships. As parents we are providing her with a warm quiet undemanding space and simply been there, which may help her heal and see things in perspective. Much less open to suggestion and ideas than Son, we can only hope she figures out for herself the things she needs to do to experience happiness.

For myself, especially with my training as a therapist, I have learned the discipline of detachment regarding the suffering of others. I am fully aware of it but do not take ownership of it, nor do I feel any guilt for enjoying happiness, pleasure and fulfilment while others are not. I have had my share of those things, and I can help others best from a position of strength.

8. TRIVIA
In the Ancient Greek city of Syracuse in Sicily, Archimedes invented a device that could predict the movement of the five visible planets on one side, and the dates of lunar exclipses on the other. It used a sophisticated system of gears driven by a turning handle that moved pointers either side of the mechanism. The existence of the device was unknown until the 21st century when the remains of it was recovered from an ancient shipwreck in the Mediterranean.
