3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
With my defence for tomorrow's Weekend Job meeting finalized, I can forget about it for today and focus on more domestic things like ironing! With the recent run of bad weather I could get nothing dry so finally resorted to the radiators and put the backlog of three batches of laundry on them, cranked up the central heating, opened all the windows, and today everything's clean and dry!

Apart from cleaning (which I do anyway) I don't mind domestic chores. I will happily spend half a day today with iron in hand. It's actually quite therapeutic if you accompany it with music or a DVD.

I've concluded that life is like tennis - it's only ever about the next ball coming towards you, and the overall result is the composite effect of how you dealt with all those balls. You need to combine the attitude of dealing with things as they come day by day with a clear purpose and intention for life. Then, your response to each little event will add up to fulfilling that purpose.

8. TRIVIA
Evolution occurs fastest when conditions are harsh, as only the best adapted survive. Intelligence evolves where as well as being harsh, the environment is continually changing. Only those intelligent enough to learn from experience and utilise resources in different ways will survive as conditions change.

Mankind's predecessor, Homo Erectus evolved into its current form, Homo Sapiens, after such conditions were the case in Africa between 500,000 and 250,000 years ago.

Human Beings have since proved incredibly resilient. Around 70,000 years ago a natural global catastrophe (the eruption of the Toba supervolcano) in the middle of the last Ice Age, nearly wiped out the entire human population leaving only around 100,000 survivors. There is some evidence that the population may even have dropped to as low as 2,000, concentrated around modern Cameroon in Africa. Once conditions improved around 50,000 years ago, human population increased rapidly, and spread all over the planet.

The end of the lce Age around 12,000 years ago, conditions became stable and favourable, allowing human beings to rise to their dominant position today.

9. ZEN WISDOM
When you devote yourself to achieving your goal, you will not be bothered by shallow criticism. Nothing important can be accomplished if you allow yourself to be swayed by some trifling matter, always looking over your shoulder and wondering what others are saying or thinking. The key to achievement is to move forward along your chosen path with firm determination.
