On the Russian Front...

Soviet 2nd Byelorussian Front continues attacking toward Danzig
Soviet 1st Byelorussian Front continues attacking toward the Baltic coast near the mouth of the Oder River
German Army Group South continues its offensive around Lake Balaton with little success
German Army Group E is engaged with 3rd Yugoslavian Army along the Drava River
German vessels Meteor and Jersbeck are sunk by Soviet aircraft in the Baltic

On the Western Front...
Field Marshal Gerd Von Rundstedt is relieved of command of all forces on the Western Front. He is replaced by Field Marshal Albert Kesselring, previously in command of the Italian Front
Canadian 1st Army mops up around Xanten and captures Veen
US 9th Army attacks toward Wesel on its left flank and regroups for an assault across the Rhine
US 1st Army mopping up around Bonn and is expanding its bridgehead across the Rhine at Remagen
US 3rd Army is advancing to the Rhine

Granville, France...
The German raiding force from the Channel Islands lands at the harbour. 67 German POWs are released, three British vessels sunk, and one coal transport is captured and towed to Jersey. One of the raiding minesweepers runs aground and is scuttled

Italy...
General Vietinghoff takes command of German Army Group C
US 5th Army occupies Monte Valbura and Monte Belvedere unopposed

In the Pacific...
Japanese reconnaissance aircraft discover the large US naval base at Ulithi Atoll
On Luzon, US 6th Army is attacking north and south of Manila

US V Amphibious Corps succeeds in splitting remaining the Japanese defences on Iwo Jima into two separate pockets

New Guinea...
Australian 6th Infantry Division captures positions around Arohemi, clearing Japanese forces from the area west of the Anumb River

Indochina...
Japan issues ultimatum to French governor Admiral Decoux, insisting on direct control over Indochina. Decoux refuses, so the Japanese act by force. French and Vietnamese troops are forcibly disarmed, and French gunboats are scuttled to prevent capture

British 14th Army is fighting its way into Mandalay and captures Mandalay Hill

3. TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION 
A new week begins, and one which sees me with clear objectives. Primarily Higher Consciousness. Secondly, making a difference and thirdly promoting my practice. Top priority will be given to disciplines and activities that calm the mind. Even before I begin there is something comforting about knowing what I want and how to get it.
