1. THIS DAY IN WW2 (15th October1942)
On the Russian Front... While the Soviet 62nd Army holds on to a small pocket in Stalingrad, Soviet counter-attacks north and south of the city are unsuccessful.

In Albania... Approximately 700 partisans attack Tirana overnight, destroying oil facilities and killing more than 170 Italian troops.

In the Atlantic... Norwegian vessel Trafalgar sunk by U-129, British vessel Newton Pine sunk by U-410, U-661 rammed and sunk by RN destroyer HMS Viscount.

In the Pacific... USN cruiser Portland bombards Japanese installations and shipping at Tarawa Atoll. In retaliation for the US raid, the Japanese execute 22 captured Allied coastwatchers held there.
At Guadalcanal, in a second operation to simultaneously attack American positions whilst landing their own reinforcements, IJN cruisers Chokai and Kinugasa bombard Henderson Field, whilst troops of the Japanese 2nd and 38th Infantry Divisions are landed at Tassafaronga on Guadalcanal. The Americans respond with air-strikes, destroying two supply ships and damaging a third. A US supply convoy to Guadalcanal is attacked by aircraft from the carrier Zuikaku. Two supply ships are damaged and and one destroyer, USS Meredith is sunk.

In Papua New Guinea... An airlift of the US 128th Infantry Regiment to Wanigela is successfully completed.
In Australia... A new US submarine base is established at Fermantle.

3. TODAY’S SELF-OBSERVATION
A highly successful Sunday in which, while Son was away, missus and I enjoyed a Tadalafil-assisted nostalgic re-enactment of how we used to spend Sunday mornings before the children arrived. Passion, Sunday papers and Fondant Fancies. Passion was greatly assisted by a shift of contraceptive reliance to missus newly-fitted IUD, which was suggested by our GP to relieve pre-menopausal heavy periods. "Bareback" feels a thousand times better! It also means the "finale" no longer needs to be faked.
